She promised herself she wouldn’t cry, that tears would not start falling from her eyes…
Before Hana Yori Dango cranked up, she told herself that she wouldn’t cry. Some tears may fall, of course, Hanadan being her most successful series ever since she entered the business, but a couple of tears wouldn’t count as crying, it would only be counted as a by-product of an overwhelming emotion, of gratitude. But the moment their scene director called in “Inoue Mao-chan as Makino Tsukushi’s crank up!” and she saw him entering together with Director Ishii, she couldn’t stop her eyes from filling. She thought he wouldn’t be coming back in just for that.
Back then, she didn’t know exactly what she felt. All she knew was that everything that had happened caught up to her; what she accomplished, what she attained while playing the drama’s heroine, all of which she knew she wouldn’t have attained if he hadn’t been the one she’s working with. Back then, she already knew that there was something different about him. Not only because he was an idol. She only knew that he was different. Whether that was different good or different bad, she’s not sure.
Back then, he was only just a friend.
---
Before the Budoukan proposal scene in Hanadan Returns, she told herself she wouldn’t cry, not only because she had been crying for a number of times already in the drama for him. Her script didn’t need her tearing up, but the moment he carried her in her arms and his warmth enveloped her skin, she couldn’t help but sniff as a couple of tears fell. Nobody really thought that much into it as it gave much more depth to her character but she knew better. He was the reason those tears escaped, not the story, not his character, not his idol face, just him, the guy she’s been playing opposite off in an aggregate of six months now.
It was of gratitude for a guy she might not be able to work with after Returns ends, the story having ended there already. When Director Ishii cried cut and they all proceeded for the checking, she saw Director Ishii bestowing an understanding smile to her.
She only understood what that smile might have meant when a little over three weeks after Returns aired it’s last scene, they were offered the script for the movie. Returns wasn’t going to be their last project together after all.
By Returns, he had become a really special friend.
---
While preparing for their last scene in Hanadan Final, she told herself that she wouldn’t cry. So many things had happened between the two of them while shooting that the months they’ve spent together with all three collaborations felt like they’ve been spending time together much more than that. Those weren’t her words though, he was the one who said that on the plane ride back from the beach where they were shooting the island scene.
But as she watched him mingle with their other co-stars, as he talked lightly with Oguri Shun and Matsuda Shota, as he talked things over with Director Ishii, she didn’t notice that her eyes were starting to well up once again. Someone else did.
“Moa-chan, are you alright?” Abe Tsuyoshi asked as he stepped next to her by the make up trailer where she just got her make up done. “You look like you’re going to start crying any moment now…”
She had placed on a huge, warm smile for their regular older but nicer brother. “I’m fine Tonton… I just realized that this would really be our last shoot together…”
Abe chuckled. “We still have lots of promotions to do…” he said. “Besides, it’s not like everything will just simply end here… He won’t be gone just because Hanadan ends…”
She looked at him in surprise and saw that there was an understanding smile on his face. Her gaze went back to the group she was watching, and hoped Abe was right, that things wouldn’t change just because they wouldn’t be working together anymore. Just then, he looked around and saw her, making him smile.
“I think I need to get my outfit already…” Abe said out of the blue, surprising her, not least because he was already wearing his costume. Before she knew it, Abe was gone, and just as she was settling herself in her chair more comfortably, she saw him walking towards her, a huge smile on his face.
Before Final even reached its midpoint, he was no longer a special friend. He became simply just special, and so is she to him.
---
When he invited her to his group’s Kokuritsu concert on the day of his birthday, she didn’t think that it would affect her that much. It wouldn’t be her first time attending one of their concerts, in fact, it was almost as if she always shows up in at least one of their concerts during the tour.
But with the outpour of support shown by their fans to counter the outpour of rain they were all standing under in, and as she watched him and his friends perform their hearts out for everyone who gathered and stayed there amidst the falling of the rain, she felt her heart well up with overwhelming emotions for the guy she’s always been with ever since that fateful day she was casted to work with him.
“Mao-chan, you’re crying aren’t you?” Shun asked when their group started making their usual farewell greetings.
She knew that he was right, tears were starting to fall down her cheeks as she was overwhelmed by his passion, his loyalty, just two of his characteristics that made her fall for the famously DoS idol.
“Of course not!” she denied, elbowing Shun. She didn’t need to acknowledge that fact when the raindrops are there to hide her tears.
Shun simply chuckled, puting an arm on her shoulder as they both waited for his turn to speak.
---
When she left her room to make herself something to eat, she didn’t expect anything.
She had gone home earlier than usual that day, feeling a bit weird and sick. Her head had been hurting badly since she woke up that morning, her back ached and her nose had been stuffed. She didn’t put too much notice to it though, other than popping in a couple of medicine. She had a shoot scheduled for the whole day. She didn’t tell him about it either, knowing that he’d have a full day as well and she didn’t want to worry him.
A little after lunch though, everyone from her manager to the director to the other cast members noticed that she was faking the lively attitude she was showing off. She had to admit that she wasn’t really well when both the director and producer ganged up to make her say the truth. After which, they made her go home and rest.
She had been asleep for a while when her hunger woke her up. Taking a glance at the clock, she saw that it was already half past midnight, no wonder she’s hungry.
But all thoughts of hunger left her mind when she saw him there, still in his day clothes, preparing something that smells deliciously like chicken soup. She felt herself sniffing, not because of her clogged nose but because she felt like crying once again. This attracted his attention.
“Oh, Hime! Why are you up already?” he asked, wiping his hands clean as he rushed to her side. “I was planning to wake you up when I’m done with this… I just checked your temperature, it’s gone down already.”
“Why are you here?” she asked instead as he assisted her to one of her counter seats. “You said you have a PV shoot ‘til 2:00 that’s why I thought you wouldn’t be able to come over tonight…”
He grinned to her as he returned to his cooking. “I asked Oh-chan to trade sequence with me for the PV shoot when your manager informed me you were sick. Why didn’t you tell me that you were not feeling well when I called you earlier?”
“I didn’t want to trouble you…” she admitted. “You had a full day’s shooting too…”
“Baka…” she heard him say as he shook his head.
After placing a ladle of the hot soup on a glass bowl, he settled it in front of her, saying “Let it cool down a bit first…” before returning back to the pot to finish things up.
As she watched the steam rising up, she could feel her heart welling up. It has already been over two years already since Hanadan shouted its last “That’s a take!” but the things between the two of them hadn’t really changed. If anything, it became better, sweeter, amidst all the difficulties behind having a relationship considering their status and occupation.
She lowered herself from the seat and made to walk towards him. She might have startled him a bit when she suddenly hugged him from behind.
“Mao-chan?” he asked, turning to face her, his hands moving to pat her head lightly.
“Arigato…” she sniffed, burying herself deeper in his arms. She felt him hugging her back and kissing her hair.
Feeling his warmth, she closed her eyes and sent a silent thank you to whomever or whatever force led him to her life and allowed her to have him.
She didn’t just love him. It was more than that. At times like this, she realizes more than ever that he is her other half. The half that makes her complete.
i'm not sure how i came up with this... :) as always, critics and comments are appreciated... :)
