He supposed it’s already his end. He saw it, even if he supposedly didn’t.

After all, he was supposed to be fast asleep at the back of the van during that ride to his location shoot for the day and really, for a while, he was but then just moments before the crash happened, something seemed to have awoken him.

He didn’t see his life flash before his eyes but he saw everything that happened. And in a way, maybe that would have sufficed. At least he knew why he found himself in a completely foreign place when he opened his eyes next.

“Am I dead?” Yamada Ryosuke couldn’t help but ask aloud before he could stop himself.

Looking around him, he saw nothing but fog. Actually, it’s more that he couldn’t see anything because of the fog. As he looked closer though, things became clearer, much more distinct. It wasn’t so foreign after all.

It looked like he’s in Ebisu Garden Place, just by the clock tower, except that it isn’t quite like the Ebisu Garden he’s seen before. It is cleaner, the buildings looked much, much older, the place deserted. It didn’t give off the feeling of a ghost town though, just that it was empty.

There was nobody around.

This confused him a lot.

With his eyebrows furrowed, he kept on turning and looking, hoping to at least get an idea on what he’s doing there. It wasn’t heaven but it sure wasn’t hell either.

But he’s supposed to be dead.

That sudden tap on his shoulder made him jump about a foot into the air. But for some reason, he can’t feel scared. He was surprised, sure, but not scared. Somehow, before he turned around, some part of him seems to be expecting it.

But still, seeing her took him aback.

“Mirai-chan?!” he exclaimed. “You’re here?!”

“Of course I’m here,” Shida Mirai tsk-ed, shaking her head before she chuckled. “We’re you expecting someone else.”

‘The Grim Reaper maybe?’ Yamada thought to himself as his eyes took in the image of his childhood friend, co-star, former classmate, batch mate, and all around frenemy before it hit him. There was nothing different about her, not really. She did look a bit more peaceful than usual. “Wait, Shida Mirai-chan is the Grim Reaper?!”

“Of course I’m not!” Mirai chuckled, hitting him lightly on the shoulder the same way she usually did back when they were still in school.

Feeling the strength of the hit, and the fact that Mirai does that to him all the time, Yamada just had to admit that it really is Mirai in front of him.

“But why are you here? Are you dead too?” he asked.

“Are you?” Mirai simply asked, smiling quizzically at him.

“I am,” Yamada promptly replied before confusion got over him. “Aren’t I?”

“I don’t know,” Mirai shrugged lightly, sitting by the clock tower. “Do you think you should be dead?”

“Should be?” Yamada repeated incredulously. “I don’t want to be dead! I don’t think I’ve lived my life enough yet. But… Well, if I’m dead, it’s not like there’s anything I can do about it, right?” he ended up, facing Mirai.

“Yeah,” Mirai smiled tenderly, her eyes looking up, away from him. “I don’t want to die yet too. I haven’t even married yet. I want to hold my children before I die.”

This surprised Yamada. For the first time since he arrived there, his mind was ruled by confusion that isn’t related to his death, or at least not obviously.

“You wanted to have kids?”

“I want to get married and then have kids,” Mirai corrected. “I want to marry the guy I love.”

“You have someone you love?” Yamada couldn’t help but ask incredulously, his jaws dropping.

Mirai raised him an eyebrow. “You seem to have a knack of repeating my words today, just with a question mark, huh?” she snorted.

Yamada shook his head, trying to clear his head. It looked like the fog is not only all around him but inside his head too. He’s entirely confused.

“I--it’s,” he started hesitantly. “Well, I just never heard you were interested with someone.”

“Everyone didn’t have to know,” Mirai shrugged nonchalantly.

“Oh,” Yamada exclaimed, his mood inexplicably disheartened. “Kamiki-kun huh?”

“What?” Mirai chuckled, looking at him in disbelief before she shook her head and chuckled. “That’s ridiculous.”

“B-But…” Yamada started. “You said…”

“I didn’t say anything,” Mirai said, her smile mysterious, pushing herself to a stand and showing her back to him. “You’re such an idiot Yamada Ryosuke,” she snorted.

Yamada blinked and the next thing he knew, she was gone.

“Mirai-chan?!” he called, looking around for the woman but it was a male voice that rose in response.

Turning in surprise towards the clock tower, the very area Mirai had just vacated, he saw someone very familiar.

“Koichi-kun?!” he cried in surprise, seeing his idol, Domoto Koichi assuming the same position Mirai was in moments ago. “What are you doing here?”

“Same thing she’s doing here,” Koichi chuckled. “Or was, at least.”

Yamada’s eyebrows furrowed. He didn’t understand.

“A-Are you dead?” he couldn’t help but ask.

“Awww! Don’t kill me just yet!” Koichi pouted playfully. “I may not act like it but I am not that old. Do you want to die?”

“Do I have a choice?” Yamada ended up asking.

“Maybe you do, maybe you don’t,” Koichi grinned. “The more important question is, why shouldn’t you?”

Yamada fell silent. Why shouldn’t he die after all?

It wouldn’t be the lack of accomplishments; he’d had his fair share. It wouldn’t be the lack of experiences, he had them too. It wouldn’t even be because he’s still too young, kids younger than him had gone before him too. But for some reason, the moment Koichi asked him his reason to live, his mind kept drifting back to Mirai.

Her “I want to marry the guy I love” bit seem to be resounding in his head too and for a moment, he fell speechless.

It didn’t seem to matter though, not to his generally subdued but is now quite talkative idol. Koichi just went on.

“I mean, friends will move on even if they’ll feel your absence. Even your family will survive even if they miss you,” he said. “At least one of your reasons to live must be one for your own, something you want to do, someone you want to be, something you wouldn’t, couldn’t live without.”

Koichi’s words, to be honest, were vague and somehow, it ended up with him looking at a distant.

That’s when he felt that sudden jolt.

The fog that was in that distance just moments ago disappeared, or rather, it formed into a scene; a beautiful yet disturbing scene, at least for him.

It was a wedding scene. Mirai’s wedding scene, that much he could see. It didn’t even bother him that just moments ago, he had been talking to the woman because somehow his understanding of time at the moment seemed to be skewed.

He held his breathe, catching sight of the mesmerizing sight that was Mirai in her wedding dress. And he wondered when and how the bubbly girl he first met all those years ago on set became this beautiful woman. He wondered when and how the semi-autocratic classmate he’d spent three of his best teen years turned into something like that.

Most importantly, he wondered how and when he wanted that moment, that sight, to be his in every right.

“Pretty, isn’t she?”

The voice of Koichi in his ear startled him. He almost forgot that he was also there but he didn’t say a word, he didn’t need to. He swallowed hard.

He heard Koichi chuckle lightly before it was followed with a sigh. “Too bad,” the guy said.

It took him all he could to tear of his eyes from the sight before him to turn to Koichi.

“What do you mean?” he asked.

Koichi didn’t reply. Instead, he nodded back towards where Mirai ‘was’. Following suit, Yamada felt his heart jump to his throat, choking him before it fell out of bounds and crashed to his feet.

Mirai had finally approached her groom, the groom that Yamada didn’t even bother noticing earlier. The guy’s face was hazy at best but somehow, a part of him, that biased and completely irrational part that usually resurfaces only when strawberries and pets come into question, identified the figure. It looked eerily like Kamiki.

Before he knew it, he was already on his feet despite the fact that he wasn’t even aware when he had taken a seat. Sure, Kamiki is a good guy and all but this is something that wouldn’t do.

Never!

Completely forgetting his sempai next to him, he advanced towards the ‘wedding’, not that every step he makes takes him closer. Somehow, even as he ran, the distance remained the same.

“Mirai,” he called her name, desperation growing inside of him as Mirai finally approached her ‘groom’. She didn’t seem to have heard him though, or didn’t feel bothered if she did, since she didn’t look back.

Yamada’s desperation grew. His feet sped faster as his heartbeat grew louder, stronger, faster.

“MIRAI!”
-----

“Guy’s he’s awake!” it was Yabu’s voice that he first hear the moment Yamada’s eyes blinked open. “He’s finally awake!”

“Good of you to join us,” Hikaru grinned making Yamada blink himself to focus as the rest of Jump shuffled to gather around his hospital bed.

“How are you? Are you okay now?” Yuto asked on concern.

His comprehension having finally caught up with the rest of his senses, Yamada frowned.

“What happened?”

“You were in an accident,” Daiki replied. “Your van fell to its side when your driver tried to avoid a car that seemed to have lost its breaks.”

“It was a good thing Rescue responded immediately,” Keito added. “Everyone in the van survived.”

“I can’t say much for the van though,” Yuya grinned, obviously trying his best to lighten up the mood. “Feeling better now?”

Yamada didn’t reply immediately as he tried to ingest everything that’s just been said. And that’s when he remembered what happened.

“Yeah,” he smiled. “I feel better now.”

“Are you sure?” Chinen asked worriedly, his eyes eyeing the machine that shows his pulse rate. “Your pulse rate peaked just before you woke up.”

“I’ll get the doctor,” Inoo declared before he was out of sight.

“Maybe in a bit,” Yamada saw Yabu smile as he, Hikaru, and Yuya, the three who were all closest to his bed, looked at each other and smiled.

“I think Yama-chan would want to at least see his other visitors first,” said Hikaru.

“I’ll go call them,” Yuya added and was gone before anyone else could say a word. In almost a flash though, he’s back, with two people in his heels.

Unknowingly, at least to most of the people in the room, and to his especially, Yamada’s pulse rate increased once more especially when Mirai’s image finally came into focus, Kamiki following close.

“Hey,” Mirai smiled the worry in her eyes slowly diminishing and Yamada felt warmth filling him. “You made us worry.”

He wanted to say sorry for making her worry. He wanted to say he’s glad that she’s there. Really, for some reason, there’s so much he wanted to say, to ask, while she’s there. But he didn’t. All he ended up doing was to smile warmly at her before he ends up demanding if she likes Kamiki even if Kamiki, and the rest of his group, is there.

Barely moments later, the doctor, followed by his parents, sisters, their manager and Inoo, arrived.
-----

“I’m worried,” Kamiki declared as the eight members of Jump, him, and Mirai waited in room where they had been unceremoniously tossed for the doctor to finish with his check-up on Yamada. His family and their manager were the only ones allowed inside at the moment.

“Me too,” Chinen voiced out, making the rest of the room turn to shortest guy there. “Something’s still up with Yama-chan. His pulse rate kept on jumping.”

“How’d you know?” asked Yuto, worry filling the guy’s face all over again.

“I checked the reading,” Chinen replied. “It jumped again too when Mirai-chan and Kamiki-kun entered the room.”

“He did?” Inoo and Mirai asked in surprise.

Yabu smiled. “I guess for the most part, we can safely assume that it’s not something to worry about, not now at least,” the eldest in the room assured the whole group.

“How can you be so sure?” Yuto asked as Chinen looked unconvinced.

“I just am,” Yabu simply smiled as Hikaru and Yuya nodded their assent. Eventually, the room eventually agreed.

“I guess I’m the only one who has a worry then,” Kamiki ended up saying after a while, followed by a worried sigh.

“Why?” Keito asked.

Kamiki looked at the rest of the room sadly before he said sadly “Because I think I saw his eyes flash at me when I spoke up in there.”

“He’s angry at you?” Yuto couldn’t help but ask, noticing the telltale signs.

“Why?” Mirai asked.

“I don’t know…” Kamiki sighed in worry and despair. “I didn’t do anything wrong.”

“Don’t worry, you didn’t” Hikaru tried assuring Kamiki while Yabu and Yuya, who had just caught each other’s eyes, ended up doubling in laughter.

Hikaru looked understanding, Kamiki torn, Mirai lost and the rest of Jump in varying degrees of confusion, exasperation, indignation, and realization.

Because just before Yamada’s eyes opened, the very reason why Yabu had approached his bed in the first place at that time, was because the elder trio heard him whisper

“Mirai…”
