Chapter1Chapter2Chapter3, Chapter4

Chapter 5:

Jun could only shake his head and sigh as he looked at the door for the nth possible time.

It had just been a little over a quarter of an hour since Masami and Ryo left the apartment and, as much as he wanted to follow them out, he didn’t. Other than the fact that it’s Ryo and Masami’s issue to settle, he’s not sure himself if he’s capable of taking in the drama that possibly just reached its heights right in front of him earlier.

It was already rather awkward for him to find himself in a position where he’s home waiting for his sister with his sister’s boyfriend and find herself coming home with her ex-boyfriend with her but it would be a lot harder for Masami. Not that he’s thinking that something is going on between Nino and Masami again, at least.

But Masami seriously loved the guy and he had actually seen her crying after Nino left the country when she thought Jun wasn’t around. And he can only imagine how difficult it is to be her, to be anyone of them actually, considering the situation. Especially with what just happened.

Jun had just heaved out another sigh when he heard a knock on the door. The first thought in his head that one (or two) of those three had returned when he heard another familiar voice speak.

“Yo! Jun! Open up!” cried Aiba.

“What are you doing here?” Jun asked in confusion the moment he opened the door for his childhood friend and right hand man. As far as he could recall, his day was supposed to be spent for reshooting in case any of the Dreamers’ pictures but since everything went on really, really well, they didn’t need to reshoot giving him an unexpected free day.

“What do you mean what am I doing here?” Aiba asked, an eyebrow raised as he followed Jun in. “I just met Nino not far from here looking like a lost puppy and didn’t even noticing me. And then I passed by Ryo and Masami at the park looking like they’re having a very seriously painful conversation. And while Nino not noticing me would have not been a big deal, neither Ryo nor your sister even noticed they were passing me by! What’s going on?”

“Ryo just saw Nino walking Masami home,” Jun replied as he crashed back on the sofa.

“Oooooh, love triangle huh?” Aiba exclaimed as he sat on the seat adjacent the sofa. When Jun simply shrugged, he asked “Why are you here then? Aren’t you worked up over it?”

“Who says I’m not?” Jun snorted as he pulled a throw pillow to bury his face to.

Aiba shrugged, accepting that action as enough of an assurance that he’s not unaffected. And then he asked “So, who do you think should Masami end up with? Nino or Ryo?”

The look of plain disbelief is evident in Jun’s face when he unburied his face from the throw pillow and looked at Aiba.

“Neither,” he still replied. “One is a snarky bastard who had hurt her greatly before. The other is a snarky idiot who can hurt her much now.”

Aiba looked at him in surprise for a while before the guy ended up chuckling. “Wow! That’s very neutral of you!”

Jun snorted, and then by chance he glanced at the wall clock and he sighed. “Unfortunately though, my opinion in this matter is not going to matter.”

“It sure won’t,” Aiba nodded and grinned while Jun ended up throwing the pillow at him.
-----

“So, what are your planning to do?”

It has already been two days since Ryo had that talk with Masami and, truth be told, he hadn’t really talked or seen the woman since then. In a way, their conversation didn’t really end that well that day.

“Of course not!” Masami cried in response to his question but Ryo couldn’t really help but note that there wasn’t much conviction in her voice when she said that.

He chuckled sadly.

“You don’t know how much I wish for that to be true.”

He hadn’t had the courage to contact her after he walked her to their apartment. Jun was already there, and so was the guy’s best friend, Aiba. He knew that the guy was really worried when he left with Masami because he saw the utter relief in the guy’s face when they came back. He remained civil after that though. Ryo was by then too deep in his pains to notice.

Looking up at his best friend, he saw the look of concern in Uchi’s face.

“Planning to do about what?” he barked, not really on the mood for small talks, not even with the guy. If truth be told, he hadn’t been in a very good mood since that day. The guy already knew of course, after all, he had dragged the guy, along with Maru and eventually Sho, to drinks after he left Erika’s place. And he told them everything; from what he saw, to what Masami said, to what he thought and felt.

“Don’t give me that,” Uchi rolled his eyes as he grabbed a seat and sat in front of him. “You know perfectly well I’m referring to you and Masami. You can’t just leave things like that.”

Ryo remained silent as his thought flitted back to that day he had that conversation with Masami.

The most painful part of that day wasn’t actually seeing her walk home with her ex. Well, there was a sting there when he saw the ghost of a smile on her lips as she walked next to the guy but it was nothing to what he felt when he heard her describe those things that attracted him to her, when he realized that those were the very same things Jun had used to describe Nino. He can’t help but wonder if it was really him Masami loved over almost two years or the ghost of her ex-boyfriend she sees in him. That was the difficult part.

“I’m working,” he told his best friend dismissively. A quick look at the wall clock told him it is half past three. Masami would be finished with her class after another half an hour. “You should too.”

“Don’t give me that crap,” Uchi replied. “You and I both know that you can’t work properly anyway, the whole building knows! Sho said half a day with you inspired beats the past two days of you working round the clock in this mood. Cut it out!”

“What do you want me to do!?” Ryo growled, his voice low but his eyes shooting daggers at his best friend. When Uchi didn’t say a thing, he continued “Really, tell me!”

Uchi sighed. “Why don’t you talk to her?” he suggested with a shrug.

Ryo opened his mouth to say something but midway from his brain to his mouth, the words got lost so he closed his mouth again. And then he, himself, sighed.

“It sure beats you staying here and scaring the hell out of all our workers,” Uchi supplied with a small hopeful grin. “Look, she may love you, she may not. Personally, I’d like to think that she does. And I know you’re worried otherwise. But I’m sure that you do love her and at the end of the day, if you’re not going to do anything about it, nothing is going to happen. Right?”

Ryo didn’t say anything, for a long while, and for once, Uchi didn’t nag. The guy just sat there as he digested everything he had just said. He already knew everything he’d just been told but, if truth be told, he might just have needed his best friend to say those words aloud. For one, he’s afraid to face the possibility of losing Masami. But he’s also, or even more, afraid of losing her without even trying.

Pushing his seat back suddenly so that he could stand on his feet, he grabbed his coat and keys and headed for the door. Before he could step out though, he stopped and turned to his best friend.

“You’re not gay, are you?” he asked jokingly.

“What?! Of course not!” Uchi replied.

From Uchi’s posture, it’s highly obvious that the guy’s willing to throw punches, and Ryo knew that despite the guy’s lean built that he can throw a mean punch, but before he could come any closer, Ryo chuckled.

“Just kidding,” he said. “I just never expected to have this kind of conversation with you.”

Uchi snorted. “I don’t have to be gay to be sensitive,” he said. “Being a man doesn’t mean I have to be a caveman,” he added, his voice filled with insinuations.

“Yeah, sure” Ryo grinned, thankful of the guy’s interference. “Tell Sho—“

“He already knows,” Uchi cut in. “He says good luck by the way. Maru too.”

With his forehead creased, Ryo asked “And how did they know I was going to heed your words?”

There was something superior in Uchi’s grin when he said “They knew the caveman would listen to reason. Maru would have done it but he didn’t want to be slugged. Sho is in a meeting.”

Ryo froze for a while before he shook his head and grinned. “I owe you guys,” he said before running out.
-----

“So, how are you so far?” Yoko asked as soon as Masami emerged from her classroom, her books already in her hand. The class has just ended.

“I’m… fine,” Masami chose to say with a small smile.

She had already told the guy what happened actually. Yoko, as much as an airhead that he is, isn’t really insensitive especially after he saw Nino walking her home and her entering the next day looking like her world has stopped turning.

“You don’t look like your fine,” Yoko replied. “Even my kids can see that you’re not in the best shape, what more about yours? Has he called yet?”

Masami shook her head sadly. “I don’t blame him really.”

“Why don’t you call him yourself?” Yoko suggested mildly as the two of them started to head out.

“I tried,” Masami admitted sadly. “I’m afraid he doesn’t want to talk to me.”

Yoko sighed. “How about the other one?”

Masami knew exactly what he meant and who he was referring to. She simply shook his head.

“Ah!” Yoko exclaimed in surprise, making Masami turn to him in confusion. After all, there wasn’t really anything surprising in what she just said. But Yoko wasn’t looking at her. The guy is looking straight ahead. And Masami, following his gaze, couldn’t help but gasp.

Because straight ahead is Ryo. And although he looked like he’d seen better days, Masami couldn’t help but think that he looked as handsome as ever.

“I guess I don’t need to walk you home,” Yoko whispered happily next to her and Masami barely noticed, especially when she saw Ryo walking towards them.

Yoko didn’t leave immediately though. He waited until Ryo reached them, not that Ryo noticed much of him, not when Ryo’s eyes are focused only on Masami.

“So, I guess I’m not needed here,” Yoko declared sheepishly.

“Yeah, thanks,” Ryo replied distractedly, his eyes still on Masami as Masami started to feel conscious at the attention. Neither of them really noticed as Yoko stepped back and walked away.

“Hi,” Ryo said eventually.

“H-hi,” Masami smiled back. “I thought you were avoiding me.”

“I tried,” Ryo replied as he stepped next to her and the two of them started to walk. “But I realized I couldn’t.”

"So, how is he?" Hina asked the moment he approached Yasuda by the vending machine on the studio where Dreamers are having a practice.

Yasuda didn't bother to look up or even ask what, or who, their manager is talking about. They knew, they all knew. After all, when Nino returned to the hotel that night looking weirder than usual, the rest of the group had taken it upon themselves to try and step in or even figure out what the hell is going on. One thing is for sure as early as then though, that whatever is going on inside Nino, it has something to do with the pretty teacher they saw at the school, the very same one they saw him talking to right before their official arrival, Masami.

"Apparently still in love, or so he thinks," Yasuda gave off a small smile. "I know Ohkura and Ohno's been talking to him. As far as I am aware, he's determined to win the girl back. He's planning to take her out tomorrow."

Hina shrugged and was about to go on his way when he doubled back and asked "Didn't you guys say that she had a boyfriend the first time you saw her?"

"Yep," Yasuda nodded. "But Nino's determined to win her back."

"Can he?" asked Hina.

"He thinks," Subaru replied from behind. "He says he knows the woman still has feelings for him. That he can feel it."

"What are you going to do about it?" Yasuda asked.

"I don't know," Hina sighed. "I know we all want Nino to be happy."

"I hear a 'but' coming on," Subaru said.

Hina grinned and shook his head. “But I really don’t think being engaged in a love triangle would be good publicity for the group right now.”

Subaru snorted and Yasuda shook his head. All three guys turned to look at the rest of the group, particularly Nino, everything about the guy shouting determination.
-----

“You’re up early on a Saturday,” Jun observed in surprise when he stepped out of his bedroom and saw his sister rummaging about in the living room at 8:00 in the morning. Usually, it being a non-school day, Masami would opt to sleep in.

When Masami turned around, Jun need no longer ask. The smile on her face is answer enough.
