TITLE: Paranoia
CHARACTERS: Ohno Satoshi, Sakurai Sho, Aiba Masaki, Ninomiya Kazunari, Matsumoto Jun, Horikita Maki
GENRE: RL
RATINGS: PG
DISCLAIMER: The only thing i own in this story is the plot...
AUTHOR'S NOTE: because it is Sho's birthday! (although it is kinda late...)
SUMMARY: it's time for Sho's secret to be revealed... or something... in line with Well Kept Secret
Sho had always hoped, well, hope might be putting it a bit too much when it’s more like a wish, that the guys, namely Jun, Nino, and especially Aiba, would soon forget his involvement in how Ohno, their eldest, got to keep his ‘secret’ to them for as long as they were able to and the conclusion they have come to as to why he had cooperated. Really, he seriously wished they would.
But he knew deep within himself that it was never going to happen, no matter how optimistic he is and despite the fact that a lot had happened since the revelation of Ohno and Meisa’s relationship and that Aiba’s birthday, Christmas and New Year had already happened since then. It wasn’t because the others had been questioning him of course. Well, they weren’t too heated about it. They’ve asked him upfront, made snide remarks and all but just that, nothing more, which actually made it all the more scarier.
Which is why he ended up always looking over his shoulder whenever he parts ways from them.
He had a secret all right, one he does not intend to reveal to the guys yet, and especially not when the three younger ones are still angling to get back at him, what with all three still feeling miffed (and not forgetting to remind him of that each and every day) about his part in keeping Ohno’s secret a secret. Actually, he had already arrived to the conclusion that they were more annoyed over the fact that he knew Ohno’s secret when they didn’t over the fact that he was Ohno’s ally.
And with his birthday just minutes away, he can’t help but feel the nerves even more.
It would make sense, after all, such poetic justice, for the guys to discover him on the same event, a birthday, they discovered Ohno’s own. Still, he’s not yet ready. After all, how was he supposed to tell Jun, who he had jokingly told “Never pegged you for a cradle snatcher, Jun-chan!” after finding out that the guy is dating his much younger –and-then leading lady, Mao; or Nino whom he ribbed some time as a “Co-star killer!” for having (or wanting to have) something to do with some or most of his previous co-stars; or even Aiba for that matter (he told the guy that “Love was too early for the menu!”) that he is currently dating Horikita Maki?!
It was already bad enough that he had to eat his words, those very words, after realizing that he had it in for his Tokujo Kabachi partner. It would be even worse because none of the guys, especially Nino, would allow him to leave it down.
He wouldn’t undo what had happened though, well, maybe parts of it so he would be more of the intellectual newscaster instead of the blubbering idiot that asked Maki out after he managed to conjure enough guts to tell the woman that. Maybe he’d even change the time where Ohno dropped by his apartment the day the guy arrived from India so he wouldn’t be asking the guy the time from his room while his cellphone lies conveniently in front of the guy.
He’s happy, with her and because of her, really. He hadn’t had that smile on his lips for a long, long time, even with Garbiella still in town. For some reason and despite the fact that both he and Maki ends up really being very busy, just a simple text or phone call would ease away all the stress that accumulated during the whole day. And he knows that the three younger ones would be really happy for him, the same way Ohno is after learning the truth behind the recently picture of a sleeping Maki he had temporarily (and stupidly) used for a background on his phone.
He just also know that those guys are going to make him pay, one way or another, because of the role he played in Ohno’s behalf.
And considering that they, as Arashi, had already officially celebrated his birthday during the concert, there’s really nothing much he could look forward to but the boys’ payback. Well, that and Maki’s gift to him of course, what with it being his first birthday with them as a couple.
So, torn between dreading and looking forward to the day ahead, Sho forced his eyes close. Whatever’s going to happen, he’s going to need at least 4 hours sleep to get through it.
-----
Sho couldn’t help but breathe out a relieved sigh.
The day, his day, at work at least, had just officially ended with their shoot for VS Arashi. He was right, in some way. The day had been really tiring, the five of them having had to do quite a lot, but if anything, physically, it could almost be considered just a regular occurrence for them. Emotionally though, it was different. At the oddest moments and most unlikely times, he would notice certain things that would jump start his nerves once again; Nino smirking as he looked sideways at him, Jun looking at him meaningfully when he was supposed to be focused at something else, or Aiba talking earnestly with the other two suddenly making the guy stop whenever he approaches. If anything, it was only Ohno who was acting entirely normal, spacing out or surfing through his phone during their breaks.
But having reached the end of the day with nothing happening, Sho had already admitted to himself that he might have just been paranoid over the whole thing. Though, to be honest, it didn’t stop him from checking his rearview mirror and side mirrors for familiar cars, recalling how they had tracked Ohno during the guy’s own birthday.
Seeing nothing though, he shook his head and pushed it at the back of his mind, thinking (praying?) that the others had let ‘his secret’ go on the grounds that they’re all too busy for the moment.
Besides, he had something much more beautiful to look forward to, namely Maki and her birthday gift for him. The woman had told him to meet her at her apartment after his shooting duties and nothing more.
-----
“What the~!”
When Maki told him to meet her at her apartment, he didn’t really know what to expect, not that he really should expect anything. Maybe a simple dinner and a kiss, just that. But he never, EVER expected to see five other people in the apartment with her the moment he steps inside, not when four of those other people had left their shoot earlier because of prior arrangements.
“Happy birthday Sho-chan!” they all cheered, all of them; Ohno, Aiba, Nino, Jun, and Meisa.
And all he could do was stutter and smile not really knowing what to say. Thankfully, they weren’t waiting for him to say anything though as the five turned to face one of the other and engaged each other in conversation. It was then that Maki blocked his view of them.
“Happy birthday,” she whispered as she hugged him and Sho did not taking long to hug her back. “I hope you weren’t too shocked.”
“No… Not that much,” he sheepishly admitted with a light chuckle. Pulling her away a bit to look her in the face, he added “I’d have preferred if it was just the two of us though,” with a grin. Maki simply smiled, with a hint of a blush high in her cheeks.
-----
“You really didn’t think we wouldn’t find out, did you?” Nino smirked just as Meisa exited the living room to help Maki who was already in the kitchen prepare some of the snacks. It was as though it was a cue because Sho found himself surrounded by the four guys all at once.
“H-how?” Sho found himself only being able to say.
“We already know there’s a secret,” Jun shrugged. “Finding out what, and who to get it from, was a piece of cake.”
Sho’s eyes grew large as he turned to the only guy there who already knew his secret from the start. “You told them?” he asked Ohno in disbelief.
“I didn’t!” Ohno shook his head.
“He didn’t have to,” Aiba chuckled. “Although he did let it slip that his girlfriend is no longer that protective of her best friend because the best friend already has a boyfriend.”
“We pieced it together from there,” Jun smiled. “But they were kind enough to save us the trouble of confirming if it was true by admitting that we are right.”
“Since when have you guys known?” disbelieving, Sho found himself able to ask.
“Since before New Year,” Nino grinned.
With his jaws dropped down, Sho allowed his eyes to travel from one familiar face to the other, all of which looking at him with a very smug look.
“You already knew?!” he exclaimed. “And there I was worrying and wondering if you guys were following me or prying in on me. I lived in fear and worry that you guys were going to walk in on what I am doing and start demanding me to reveal my secret! I mean, you guys were still asking me about it yesterday!”
“That was the plan,” Aiba smiled. “Since we didn’t have to bust you anymore, we just went on and pretended that we still did not know.”
Sho’s eyes grew large in disbelief for a moment before it narrowed down and zeroed in on Nino.
“This was your idea, isn’t it?” he asked suspiciously, all too painfully aware of how sadistic the guy’s pranks could be.
“All ours actually,” Nino replied, with a sweet smile and his head held high. “You have to admit, it was an ingenious idea. After all, paranoia is such a great thing.”
“Yeah,” Jun added with a smirk of his own. “We know you were going to think it, you were going to expect us to do something. It was pretty sweet having had our revenge without really, actually doing anything.”
He almost couldn’t believe what he was hearing, except that he does, and he will agree that the prank was successful. Very successful.
“You guys…”
-----
“So, how does it feel being 30?” Maki smiled the moment she felt Sho hugging her from behind, Meisa having left the kitchen mere moments ago.
“I’m not quite sure at the moment,” Sho replied, laying his head on her shoulders. “I’m feeling quite a lot of things at the moment; disbelief, surprise…”
“I hope happiness is added somewhere in there,” Maki said, turning around to face the guy, her hands immediately landing itself on his shoulders as his hands wrapped comfortably around her waist.
It looked for a moment that Sho was just thinking about it, especially with the way his head inclined to the side. And then he grinned.
“Definitely,” he said. “I’m definitely happy.”
Maki couldn’t help but beam. But before she say anything to that, Sho leaned over and made sure she wouldn’t.
He captured her lips.
