Chapter 21: Why's and Wherefores
It was a couple minutes more after Toma woke up when Jun finally called the girls and Ryo and the doctors to inform them that Toma is already awake. Other than the fact that they both needed to recover from the conversation they shared, they also had come to an agreement that they have to say that Toma had really just woken up.
But while Maki, Mao, Erika and Ryo all raced to his room immediately, they were still unable to see Toma that soon. The doctors, after all, had to check on him and only when he was declared fit and ready to talk (which Jun and Toma both knew that he was), were they able to talk.
After a few minutes of talks and worries and reliefs, Ryo finally said the question they all wanted to ask.
“What happened?”
Toma didn’t say anything for a while as he looked at those who were around his bed. Worry and anxiety etched on all their faces but as he looked around, his gaze, surprisingly, stayed more not on Mao but on Maki. For some reason, he structured his thoughts more for Maki’s benefit than anyone else’s, even himself. He didn’t want her to start feeling guilty or something like that.
“I met him at the highway,” Toma started.
Toma was just rubbing the back of his neck to ease the pain that’s been throbbing there for a while now. After all, he and their team lead had been pouring over papers and plans for hours on end despite the weekend. He doesn’t find himself sleepy though, even though he sees as he glanced at his watch that it’s already 4 in the morning.
That was when he heard the car honking from behind him.
Feeling not in the mood to speed up, he signaled the driver to just pass him by. Seeing the car speeding up from his side-mirror, her thought it ended the trouble. That is, up until the car increased its speed only to drive alongside him, the driver honking his horn again.
Curiously and in slight irritation, Toma spared the other driver a quick glance but then found himself taken aback by who he saw. It was Yamashita. But that wasn’t the shocking part. It was the look on the guy’s face and eyes. There was a look of malice there, of anger, of hatred.
“Hello Ikuta Toma!” he heard him cry, his teeth bared in a snarl. And that’s when the guy first hit car.
Shocked and thoroughly surprised, it was almost a miracle that Toma was able to get back on the road and not completely thrown out.
This only seemed to annoy Yamapi though as he said “I still haven’t made you pay for that disgrace you did me back I college. But I guess your death would be enough payment for you taking my girl!”
Although taken aback at the guy’s words, Toma was already ready for the second time Yamapi’s car hit his. But while he’s able to steady his own car, he, himself, started feeling annoyed especially after hearing the guy refer to Maki as his girl.
After a couple more bumps and hits, Toma saw Yamapi’s car slowing down. He was just about to breathe a sigh of relief when he suddenly felt the car being pushed forward with the stop light just a few meters away turning red. And even as he hit the break and tried to swerve away, the car didn’t stop. And that’s when he saw the truck.
The only thing he knows for sure is that he needed to brace himself from impact.
-----
“That bastard!” Erika exclaimed, much to the surprise of everyone around them. When she sensed everyone’s eyes on her though, particularly the silently bemused look in her cousin’s face, she added incredulously “What?!”
“Well, we don’t need to worry about Yamashita-san anymore,” Ryo said immediately, causing his girlfriend to throw him a thankful look, followed closely by a questioning one mimicked by the rest of those in the room.
“What do you mean?” Toma asked.
Ryo smiled.
“Well, it seems that Takizawa Hideaki and Ohkura Tadayoshi are good for more than just a couple of beers and chasing girls,” he said. “Ohkura-kun sent me a message. The chief of police made Toma-kun’ case a priority. Yamashita-san has just entered a prison cell downtown. I guess it pays to have two friends in the force, especially when one of them is the son of the police himself.” Turning to Jun, he added helpfully “Takizawa-kun is the chief’s son.”
-----
“You’re not going to see him?” Toma asked.
It was just him and Maki in the room he’s been transferred to hours ago after being cleared from the ICU. Mao and Erika had already been taken home by Ryo and Jun respectively after losing on a game of janken on who should stay first.
The girls, after all, had already come to an agreement that it’s no use for all of them to be there and that it’d be better for them to just take turns, a thought Ryo fed to them personally. It was also the guy who suggested the game when none of the girls could come to an agreement on who should stay that night, the night after, and so on and so forth.
And so they played janken, where Maki’s scissors winning against Mao and Erika’s paper.
“But you always use rock!” Erika exclaimed as they stared at their fists, oblivious to the amused and quite incredulous the three men around them had on; even Mao looked shocked and appalled at the result as opposed to Maki’s triumphant grin.
“You always use paper,” Maki chuckled a matter-of-factly and confidently.
“Why should I?” Maki asked as she arranged the fruits Ohkura and Tackey brought over when they dropped by half an hour after the four left.
Toma didn’t say anything for a while. He couldn’t. For some reason, he found it difficult to voice out the ready answer he had in mind. He’s not sue if he’s not ready to see her reaction on what he’s going to say or if he’s not ready to see and feel his own reaction when he sees how she reacts on what he has to say.
He still ended up voicing it out though, after he swallowed quite hard.
“You loved him,” he said. “And considering that I think he’s the reason why you cried that time at the park, I think you still have feelings for him.”
Toma found himself holding his breath as he waited for Maki to answer. He could see from the corner of his eyes that her hands had stopped arranging and rearranging everything and anything on his side table.
And when she finally spoke, he almost didn’t hear it. Her voice was so low.
“I used to love him,” Maki said, putting emphasis on the word ‘used’. “I was surprised with his return, made me reminiscent, made he remember how it all was before. I wasn’t expecting to see him again after all these years. But I’ve already decided that there’s no longer anything there.”
For some reason, Toma found himself relieved after hearing her say that, a reaction that confused him a lot. Shrugging it off for a while, something sparked in his head, making him secretly grin.
“Hey,” he started off in a mellow voice. “Don’t shut him off just because of what happened to me.”
“Who said anything about you being the reason?” Maki exclaimed immediately, much to Toma’s pleasure.
Sure he was weird-ed out by that initial response he had earlier but it was even weirder for him being in the situation he’s currently in with Maki. It didn’t feel normal for them to be acting that way. And while he’s still unsure of the reason behind some of his own thoughts and reactions, he still prefers things to be normal, for the moment at least.
After all, silent and agreeable isn’t exactly his and Maki’s thing.
“For your information,” Maki continued. “I’ve already cleared out everything with him even before this thing happened so don’t go assuming things. I don’t necessarily need a third party to have to break up with him, you know!”
Maki had just finished that statement when she and Toma caught each other’s eye and before long, they found themselves laughing. Neither of them really knew why they’re laughing but it felt good anyway, especially to Toma. Seeing Maki like that felt a whole lot better to him as opposed to the teary version he kept on seeing ever since he woke up after the operation.
After a while though, their laughter ended and silence reigned. This time, it was Maki who broke it.
“I know what you did,” she said.
“What did I do this time?” Toma asked with an air of exaggerated exasperation.
“Back in college,” Maki shrugged as she sat down next to Toma on the bed. “I know what you did and what happened right before I broke up with Yamashita.”
Toma sighed and shook his head lightly. “Mao-chan shouldn’t have told you about it. She didn’t have to. That ex-boyfriend of yours was just as idiot.”
“Yeah,” Maki sighed in agreement. “It takes one to know one,” she added cheekily.
“You’re calling me an idiot?” Toma exclaimed.
“Yes, I am!” Maki replied. “You shouldn’t have done that. You didn’t need to do that for me you know.”
“Who said anything about need?” Toma asked. “I wanted to do it. I wasn’t about to sit back and watch him make an idiot out of you. You deserve more than that. You deserve more than him.”
Maki was held speechless for a while before she pried open her lips and said “Thank you” in a really small voice. Her voice got slowly stronger and steadier though as she continued “I never really thought something like this could happen, that it is even possible, especially to the two of us. I don’t know why, but still, thank you.”
“You don’t have to thank me,” Toma found himself saying. “I will do anything to protect you.”
