SUMMARY: Shun believes Maki likes Yamapi. Maki says otherwise. is it a true, or is it a lie? goes to show that matchmakers aren't always right.

“Can we, at least, please come to an understanding and an agreement that the next time I say I’m not interested in a guy, I really mean it?” Horikita Maki sighed as she and Oguri Shun reached the VIP’s entrance/exit of one of the top restaurants in Harajuku where they had quite an uneventful dinner. Uneventful in the sense that none of Shun’s hidden plans for that dinner with their Hana Kimi co-star and friend, Ikuta Toma, and one of the guy’s best friends, Yamashita Tomohisa.

That star-studded ensemble was made possible when Shun emotionally blackmailed Maki out for dinner because his girlfriend, Yamada Yu, is not in the country and they coincidentally met with the two Johnny boys in the restaurant.

Maki, though, realized early on that nothing is coincidental with that dinner, judging on how conversations and looks flowed throughout the night, particularly coming from Shun’s side. She knew it was a farce orchestrated by Shun himself. After all, the guy is still heavily convinced that she has the hots for her Nobuta Wo Produce and Kurosagi co-star, no matter how much she says otherwise.

“What are you talking about?” Shun asked innocently, an innocence they both knew wasn’t real. “It was just a simple dinner.”

“Which you orchestrated!” Maki exclaimed, not even bothering to lower her voice. This particular block they are in, after all, is known for very strict protection policies for the customers of the establishments occupying it, including the restaurant they just got out of.

Any reaction or continuation to those words were cut short when they both noticed two male figures hovering around the area they both knew had Shun’s car. Before they could do anything more than just increase the beatings of their own hearts, one of the male figures exclaimed “I knew I saw Shun car!”

There are only a few people who calls Shun without so much as a –kun which is why they know immediately who that person was. They didn’t have to wait for a confirmation though because right after that statement, that person stepped into the light.

“Jun?!” Shun cried in exasperation as they both walked towards the car. “You almost gave us a heart attack!”

“You’re either getting older faster than I thought or you’re eating too much fat if that almost gave you a heart attack,” Jun snorted before turning to Maki and bowing lightly. “Maki-chan. You already know my group mate right? Sho-kun? I heard you two have already met for that drama you’re both going to be on.”

Maki, who’s heartbeat has just normalized at the sight of Jun started feeling her own heart beat very fast again as she turned to the second guy emerging from the shadows. “Sakurai-san,” she said respectfully.

“Horikita-san,” Sho bowed in reply.

As opposed to the quite formal and very strict greetings the two had given each other, Shun and Jun were talking very loosely next to them.

“What are you two doing here? Where’s Yu-chan?” Jun asked.

“On a shoot. Mao-chan?”

“Same,” Jun shrugged. “So what are you doing here?”

“Dinner,” Shun simply replied.

“Oh! I thought I saw Toma-kun’s car earlier. You guys saw him?”

“Them,” Maki interjected before throwing Shun a dirty look. “We had dinner with them.”

“Yamashita-kun,” Shun said in response to the obvious but unspoken question in Jun’s eyes.

After one meaningful look shared with his best friend, and a quick look to Maki’s direction, Jun ended up chuckling.

“Okay, looks like dinner didn’t quite go as planned,” he said. “Why don’t you guys joins us. Sho-kun and I are having a drink and everyone else are busy.”

“No problem,” Shun replied immediately before stopping shirt and looking at Maki who had just stared to look really apprehensive. “Unless…”

Before Maki could voice out her concerns, or what could pass off as her concern, Jun smiled “Don’t worry in case we do get too much to drink, there’s always Sho-kun here who’d take care of you.”

Maki wasn’t sure if it was Jun’s soothing voice or Sho’s assuring look that prompted her to nod. Nonetheless, she still did, leaving her first companion looking a bit confused and a whole lot suspicious.
-----

“I told you, I wasn’t really planning anything so I cannot have failed!” Shun exclaimed before he downed the remaining contents of his glass.

It was only him and Jun left in their private drinking room but it wasn’t because the others had already left. Maki had just headed to the powder room while Sho excused himself to receive a phone call. The absence of the two though gave Jun the opportunity to ask his best friend about some of the things he had noticed and from the little Maki had let slip.

Jun simply snorted as he regarded the guy. “Really? You’re lying to me? Is Oguri Shun that drunk to think that he’s going to be able to lie to his best friend and get away with it?”

Shun looked at him for a while before he sighed and shook his head.

“Fine!” he ended up exclaiming, prompting Jun to chuckle.

“It’s not funny you know,” Shun pouted as he poured himself another drink. “I seriously did think that she liked Yamashita-kun and that she was just saying otherwise.”

“Yeah, Yu-chan said something like that,” Jun chuckled before he doubled back and said “Wait, did? As in, not anymore?”

Shun grinned. “That’s right.”

“And why is that?”

“Because I think she’s in love with someone else, another Johnny,” Shun confidently replied. “And don’t tell me you haven’t picked ‘that’ up?”

Jun stared at his best friend for a while, but not in confusion or in contradiction. And then they both ended up sharing quite a mischievous smile as if they could read each other’s mind.

And then the door opened with Maki’s reappearance, and, with one look at who remained there, she asked “Sakurai-san left?”
-----

“I’m really, really sorry about these two,” Sho said with a slight bow after he opened the door for Maki.

They were already right in front of her apartment building after a rather awkward ride when Maki had to sit next to Sho in front because their other two drinking partners were so drank they had crashed at the back seat of Jun’s car (which, fortunately was bigger than Shun’s and was able to carry them all).

“Oh, no,” Maki smiled shyly as she threw the duo a look. “I’ve drank with Shun-kun before and this is the first time I’ve seen him this drunk. It’s all quite amusing actually.”

Sho ended up smiling too. “It’s also my first time. Usually, when these two reach this point, I’ve already passed out,” he admitted.

Maki’s eyes moved to Sho’s face quickly and they ended up smiling, both of them sporting a tinge of red in their cheeks which could easily be attributed to alcohol, or something else entirely.

“Ah…. Uhm… Please take care of me during the shootings,” Maki ended up stammering hastily to break that silence as she bowed once again. A form Sho had mimicked when he replied “Likewise!”

A few more moments of awkward silence filled the air after they both straightened up until Maki gave an awkward smile and said “Thanks for tonight! Please take care!” before taking off.

Sho stood there, rooted to the spot as he followed her movement. Only after he saw her entering her door did he finally move to get back in the car. This was probably a very good idea to do quickly just in case someone sees them and misinterprets it.

“She’s home already?” Sho heard Shun slur from the back as soon as he started the engine. “That’s good. Thank you.”

Looking through the rearview mirror, Sho saw that both Shun and Jun had theirs eyes clothes and their mouths slightly opened, seemingly really drunk. It didn’t even look as though Shun was aware that he said what he just said.

“You guys,” he chuckled, shaking his head. “I’m not your driver you know!”

He wasn’t expecting any kind of reply to that which is why it still came as a surprise when Jun’s voice floated from behind.

“Maki-chan is really pretty, isn’t she?” he said.

Turning around quickly to look at them, Sho saw that they were still asleep and that Jun had even reached out to scratch his neck, a sign he usually sees when they’re travelling together and Jun is falling asleep while he remained awake.

And then the memory of Maki during their previous cast meeting for Tokujo Kabachi trying her best to concentrate and not looked bored or sleepy and then earlier as she bantered with Shun and Jun, he couldn’t help but smile. Quite confident that the two men behind him wouldn’t even hear him, or would forget that they heard him, he replied aloud

“Yeah. Yes, she is.”
-----

“No!”

This was the loud cry that was heard late that afternoon from inside the Arashi greenroom. The regular occupants of the room were all there as they are on a break from shooting a string of VS Arashi episodes. They weren’t alone though. There was already another guy inside when the five of them arrived.

“I’m not going to drink with you two!” Sho insisted. “Not this soon anyway!” he added as he looked at Shun and Jun, who are seated by the sofa comfortably. And he looked, for all intents and purposes, seriously adamant of the invitation those two had just mentioned, much to the amusement and surprise of everyone in the room except him.

“If you think I’ve forgotten, I haven’t!” he continued. “I don’t enjoy being the driver of two drunken fools again!”

“Jun-kun got drunk? And you Shun-kun?” Aiba exclaimed from his seat on the table opposite Sho. “That’s rare!”

“Un!” Ohno agreed with a nod.

“Not really,” Jun smiled. “Ask Sho-chan, we really were drunk the other night. That’s why he ended up driving Horikita Maki-chan home.”

“Wait a minute,” Nino interjected, stopping his shuffling of his cards in front of Ohno as he eyed the smiling Shun and Jun suspiciously before he turned to Sho and asked “Are you sure they were really drunk?”

“Why?” Sho asked, throwing a sudden suspicious look at the duo at the sofa again. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing,” Nino shrugged with a small smile on his lips as he resumed his shuffling. “I just found it amusing that you survived their drunken episode. These two quarrel like a married couple when they’re drunk,” he stated.

Sho was just about to open his mouth and say that they were relatively quieter that night when his eyes grow large and understanding dawned on him and then he threw Shun and Jun, who are now looking quite innocently at him, an accusing stare.

Everyone else in the room, of course, knew what that meant.

“They weren’t really drunk, right?” Aiba asked Sho as Ohno turned to Jun and Shun and exclaimed “You were playing a prank on Sho-kun!”

The identical grin that surfaced on Jun and Shun’s face was answer enough, prompting everyone but Sho to laugh.

“Well,” Nino started when the laughter died down with Sho still looking torn between furious and ashamed. “While he isn’t exactly the most difficult breed to prank, I’d give you guys an A. how’d you manage it?”

“It was pretty simple actually,” Shun smiled.

“Yeah,” Jun nodded. “All it took was Horikita Maki-chan’s presence and Mama Sho-chan is already distracted.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Sho cried indignantly as he tried his best to look away from the rest of the occupants of the room.

“I guess that they’re trying to say that they already figured out your huge crush on Horikita Maki-chan,” Aiba said plainly and rather innocently.

“I hate you,” Sho could only tell the guy as the others broke into another round of laughter with Aiba smiling sheepishly at him before burying his face in on his palms. It didn’t take long before he felt someone thumping him by the shoulders and, judging by the feel of metal, he knew who it was.

“Come on Sho-kun,” Jun said. “There’s no point denying it! Well, not to us anyway.”

“And it’s not like we’re going to hit you or anything,” Shun added.

Raising his head, Sho realized that everyone, literally, everyone, in the room had stood up and crowded around him, looking at him interestedly.

With four guys who knew him really well and one guy who didn’t seem to even need to hear what he’s going to say, Sho knew that he had no way out.

“Fine!” he declared. “I might have had a small crush on her for quite some time.”

“Since when exactly?” Shun asked.

“I don’t…” Sho was just saying when Aiba said “Since Nobuta Wo Produce days, he kept on saying that Kame-kun and Yamapi-kun were so lucky that they got to work with her.”

If looks could kill, Aiba would already be dead as Sho threw him a look that could rival Jun and Nino’s murderous glares.

“She’s literally a kid back then!” Nino exclaimed. “I never pegged you for a cradle-snatcher Sho-chan!”

“I wasn’t…” Sho was just starting to say when he was cut of again, this time, by Shun.

“Never mind that. The answer is, what are you going to do about it?”

“What do you mean what I’m going to do?” Sho asked.

“Well, you are going to do something, right?” Jun asked pointedly. “Because my group mate and friend is no coward.”

“Besides, with the rate she’s going, she’s likely going to be taken by some other guy. A future co-star or leading guy who’d be charming and romantic, it’s irritating, especially when he’s in your group,” Nino added, the last parts he said as he looked at Jun pointedly. Nino, after all, though completely unaffected now by the fact that Mao and Jun are now together, still feels a bit miffed that his own group mate got his crush.

Jun, acknowledging that last part with a simple pat on Nino’s back, continued “Maki-chan is getting really popular. And I don’t think she had even reached her peak.”

“And as her friend, I consider it my responsibility to make sure that she gets taken care off,” Shun said. “And somehow, I believe that you’ll do.”

“Toma-kun says so too, by the way,” Jun supplied.

“And since it is already established in this room that you do like her, what are you going to do about it?”

With his mouth agape, Sho looked at the five men around him in shock until his eyes landed on Ohno who said “Good luck Sho-chan!”

Sho could only sigh.
-----

“You needn’t invite me out to dinner just because we’re working together now, you know,” Maki was saying as she and Sho headed to the elevator.

They were at the Ikuta Studios to shoot some of the scenes of the third episode of their drama that had already started airing, Tokujo Kabachi.

Sho smiled. “You’re right. I didn’t need to, but I wanted to.”

Stopping in her heels in surprise, Maki looked in Sho’s eyes and asked “Why?”

“What do you mean why?”

“Why do you want to invite me out to dinner?”

“Do I need to have a reason?” Sho asked.

“Of course,” Maki replied. “I believe that you don’t do anything unless there’s a reason behind it.”

“Hmmm…” Sho said as he paused for a bit. “For tonight, it’s a thank you for helping me out during the shootings. The next time, maybe it’s for a successful showing. I think the next would simply be for yourself. As for the others, I’m sure I’d be able to figure one out.”

Maki looked at him in surprise, a look Sho met quite steadily. After a while, they both smiled as though they’ve reached an understanding.

“That’d be great,” Maki said as they continued walking. “Next time, I could help you find for a reason if you ran out of it,” she said as she stopped right in front of the elevator.

No other word passed between the two of them even after they boarded the elevator as they continued stealing glances of the other. Just when the door was about to close though, Sho looked down at Maki just as Maki turned to look at him. And then they both started laughing.

That was the scene that the duo hiding behind one of the slightly opened doors in that corridor and watching them saw the elevator started its descent.

“Well, that was smooth,” Shun said as he and Jun stepped out.

“I can only imagine the amount of time and thought Sho-chan poured into that line,” Jun said half-proudly, half-amusedly as he nodded. “Anyway, I do have a question. How sure are you that you didn’t make a mistake again this time?”

“Was there any indication with what we just saw that screamed it was a mistake?” Shun asked incredulously.

“Well, no,” Jun shrugged. “But just for the sake of argument.”

Shun smiled, remembering that conversation he once had with Maki when Maki was still convincing him that there’s something more between Toma and Higa Manami.

“So you’re saying that you have absolutely no interest in a guy, a Johnny idol, almost everyone else is saying to be ideal boyfriend material, popular, and a huge hit with the ladies?” Shun asked incredulously.

Maki paused for a while.

“If the question is ‘Do I like Yamapi?’, then, the answer is no… But if you say it that way, that’s a different matter all together…” she said eventually and with a sly grin on her lips.

Maki had practically said it then, well, not exactly the guy’s name but who he was. And in addition to her reaction earlier, Sho’s perfect fit to her description only convince him more.

“You may know your group mate but I know Maki-chan,” Shun simply said instead.

“Fair enough,” Jun shrugged. “Although I have to say, this isn’t actually matchmaking already. This time, it seems to me like you forced more than convinced.”

“All is fair in love and war,” Shun smiled. “Besides, if I remember it correctly, I forced you and Mao-chan to break that huge wall you’ve built between you two, remember?”

“No you didn’t!” Jun replied and Shun laughed with Jun joining him not soon after.

“So, who’s next?” Jun asked eventually.

Shun stopped for a bit and pondered. And then he grinned.

“Well, I’ve still got a lot of single friends in the industry. Any of them will do.”

Summary: Does the supernatural exist? If yes, how exactly are they connected to mere humans? Do they even affect us? This isn’t a supernatural story, well, not exactly at least. But this story does start with the supernatural, and how plans tend to backfire even when it’s made by a supernatural himself.

Two sets of families were overjoyed that day, one set because of the birth of a bouncy baby boy the previous night, the other set, rejoicing the arrival of a beautiful baby girl that morning. But other than those families, along with every other family, pair or individual human who had found a reason to be happy for that moment, there were still others who are also elated, particularly with the arrival of the newborns.

Somewhere, hidden deep within their world, a set of supernaturals are overjoyed too.

These supernaturals, who prefers to be called guardians, don’t exactly do what their preferred name implies. They don’t exactly guard their human subjects. They don’t even stay with just one human subject all the time. What they do is ‘profess’ a certain point in that subject’s life and whatever happens, that prophecy will be fulfilled, may it be the age of marriage, future profession, time of death, or even the person s/he is bound to fall for. The last part though, they rarely interfere with. After all, they already know that their prophecies are somewhat restricting to their humans. And they also believe that there are some things humans have to choose for themselves.

And as such, the perfect time for prophecies is just after the baby is born.

“Look at him! He’s going to be a really good-looking guy!” one guardian exclaimed over the cloud towards his human, the baby already fast asleep in his crib as his relatives gush over him.

It isn’t really clear how a guardian finds out that a newborn is going to be one of his many subjects. There’s no particular pattern or signal, it’s just that once the baby is born, a guardian will know the human is his/hers and whatever prophecy s/he makes will be fulfilled.

“And he’s going to be quite talented too!” the boy’s guardian continued.

Not far from him, a second guardian, a female one this time, spoke up.

“Really? That is going to be your prophecy?” she snorted after a quick look at the first guardian’s human. “I would have thought that it would be obvious to the boy already. Just like my baby!” she added as she looked at her own human with a smile. “She’s obviously going to be really beautiful and smart! And I wouldn’t even need to prophesize that!”

“And who says it is my prophecy?” the boy’s guardian snapped back.

“It isn’t?” the girl’s guardian asked in fake surprise. “Forgive me for assuming that it was. It’s not entirely my fault though, considering that it is you were talking about.”

Before the boy’s guardian could even react though, another guardian, positioned right between them, said “Are you two going at it again? Seriously! You two are the only guardians I know who seems to be going against each other just out of principle.” He added, after taking a quick look at the two humans, “Looks like your humans would be living close to each other. I think the two of them would get along. They may even end up falling for one another. Maybe these two could be what you guys seemed determined not to become.”

“Of course not!” the girl’s guardian said immediately. “These two wouldn’t even be childhood friends! They’re going to grow up in two different places.”

“Way to go to waste your prophecy,” the boy’s guardian scoffed causing the girl’s guardian to scowl. “But to a certain point, I agree. Because this boy is going to be a Johnny.”

“Johnny?” the girl’s guardian repeated in confusion.

“A talent agency specializing in honing young, good-looking boys at an early age,” the boy’s guardian replied importantly and rather gloatingly.

“I’ve heard of Johnny’s Entertainment,” the third guardian said. “I’ve had a few humans who entered that agency. Good choice for entertainment career improvement, bad for the matters of the heart. Looks like you two are determined to not let this two get together, that company has one of the strictest dating rules I’ve ever heard!”

“Of course!”

“Not gonna happen!”

The third guardian chuckled.

“Now, now,” he said. “Don’t be so sure of it. After all, you can no longer prophesize that. You’ve both used up your sole prophecies, remember?”

“No need,” the boy’s guardian replied confidently. “After what’s been prophesized, that probability is very close to zero.”

“Like I said, don’t be so sure,” the third guardian said before he saw how determined the two other guardians looked. He ended up chuckling. “This is fun! For the first time in recent memory, you two seemed to have agreed on something. Too bad you’re both letting your emotions interfere with what you guys are doing. It’d be interesting to see how this would turn out.”
-----

At present…

“Yama-chan! I told you, I don’t want to be late for our first day at school!” a boy, quite small in height but with an extremely cute face and charming aura, cried as he stood by the open door that read “Hey! Say! JUMP Greenroom.”

“Will you just relax Chinen-chan?” another male voice replied proceeded by the appearance of a slightly chubbier and slightly taller boy from another room marked the comfort room. This boy is good-looking too, but while the first one is on the cuter side, this one seemed to be on the hotter side, so to speak. “We’re going to use the company car. We’re not going to be late!”

“I don’t care!” Chinen replied in exasperation. “I just want to go already!”

“Geez!” Yama-chan, Yamada replied. “You’re so excited! Yuto-kun is not yet even here!”

Before Chinen could reply though, another voice came up, this time coming from one of the five men who was in the room other than those two. These five are obviously older than the first two but are all good-looking too, just in different ways. And all five men are looking at Yamada and Chinen in amusement.

“Yuto-kun?” Yabu, the oldest of the group asked. He looked quite a bit like Yamada but with a smaller face and a gentler look. “Yuto-kun went down already! He’s waiting at the car!”

“Yeah,” seconded Hikaru, one of the remaining four. This one is thinner and had quite a mischievous face. “And while we do enjoy watching you guys debate, I’m worried about the state of the car and our driver who’s left alone with a tired-of-waiting Yuto-kun.”

“You two better hurry,” added Yabu as he stood up. “You don’t want to be late for your first day at school.”

Yamada, who had been heading towards the door throughout the exchange, and Chinen caught each other’s eyes, nodded and grinned before turning to look at Yabu and saying in chorus “Yes mother!

Yabu could only gape as almost every one of those in the room laughed and chuckled.

The only one who wasn’t laughing, outright at least, and this one probably has the hottest look at present among them all coupled with a really attractive pair of eyes, Takaki Yuya, threw an air salute to Yamada and Chinen and said “Enjoy your first day! Good luck!”

“Yes!” both boys chorused before rushing out of sight. Before the sound of their footsteps could completely disappear though, a voice, clearly belonging to Chinen, was heard saying “Bye! Bye! Yanyan!”

“Now why did he only say goodbye to you?” Daiki, the shortest guy in the room pouted before throwing an almost accusing look at Yuya.

The latter chuckled and simply replied with “The guy loves me,” much to the amusement of everyone else, including Daiki himself.

When the laughter died down, everyone else noticed that Hikaru was looking very curiously at Daiki, much to the confusion of the last guy, the prettiest one of them all, Inoo.

“What’s wrong?” Inoo asked.

“For a while, I was wondering why Daiki-chan is still here,” Hikaru admitted with a wicked grin as everyone else other than Daiki tried to stop themselves from laughing or smiling openly. “And the younger ones aren’t.”

Daiki, who knew that it was yet another rib at his height (or lack thereof), said with sarcasm “Yeah! Very funny! Very funny indeed.”

“What?” Hikaru asked, feigning surprise in a very ineffective way. “I was referring to that drama you had with Chinen-chan, Yuto-kun, and Yama-chan. Unless of course you know of something else.”

“Yeah, right!” Diaki snorted but with a small smile on his lips. The joke, after all, is a very common one in their group that it doesn’t affect him anymore.

“Wait a minute!” said Inoo. “Where did Morimoto-kun go? He was asking me something just earlier.”

“He’s probably in school by now,” Yabu replied. “Now that you guys mentioned it, with those guys gone, it’s just us Best in here.”

“Yeah,” Daiki agreed. “Keito-kun said something about Japanese classes.”

“I still sometimes find it weird,” Hikaru said. “A Japanese guy taking Japanese lessons.”

“Not when he grew up abroad,” Yuya said.

“It’s good that he’s doing his best,” said Yabu. “At this rate, all of 7 would be studying, right? While us Best hang tight and wait.”

“Speak for yourself,” Inoo said before pushing himself to his feet. “I have a class at 10:00 so I need to get going myself.”

“Oh, okay,” the others shrugged. Before he reached the door though, Inoo stopped on his tracks and turned around to ask “Their first day at school, what do you think would happen?”

“They’re attending Horikoshi Gakuen, right?” said Yuya. “What could happen?”

“Yeah. What indeed?”
-----

“Great! We’re not late!” Chinen exclaimed in a low voice as he, Yamada, and their other group mate/classmate/friend, Yuto, a tall and lanky good-looking guy, walked along the corridors of their new school.

“Yeah,” Yuto agreed. “But to be a honest, I’m half hoping we were a bit late. At least, maybe there’d be less people gaping at us.”

“Come of it!” Yamada chuckled in a voice matching the volume adapted by the first two. “You’re a Johnny, you’re supposed to be used to this kind of attention already.”

“He’s right!” echoed Chinen although he had his head slightly down.

“Yeah, true,” Yuto said. “But Horikoshi Gakuen is supposed to be used to people like us. I can still feel people staring!”

“Well, Horikoshi Gakuen or not, it is still a bit unusual for 3 idols to be walking along a corridor all at the same time,” came another male voice from behind them. “But then again, maybe they’re staring because of me.”

Turning around, the three saw a familiar tall and good-looking guy known as Irie Jingi.

“You’re coming here too?” Chinen asked in surprise after seeing the guy they’ve met for a few times already.

While Hey! Say! JUMP, the group the three of them belong to, along with a few others, is part of possibly the most influential talent agency in the country, Johnny’s Entertainment, Irie prides himself as an actor too.

“Yep,” he smiled. “And I think we’d all be in one class, along with a few others.”

“Others? Who?”
-----

“Wow!” Yuto whistled as their little group entered the room assigned to their section. Irie was right, they all belonged in just one section, along with a few other notable names in the entertainment industry.

“This looks like a drama set!” Yamada chuckled at the sight of the many familiar faces.

Chinen though, who had been following Irie’s progress, saw another notable face the guy had approached that his two friends had possibly not yet noticed. “Oi! Yama-chan! That’s Shida Mirai-san, right?” he asked, nudging Yamada.

Yamada looked around quickly as if in disbelief of what he just heard. But then he saw for himself that it was true.

“Uhm, yeah…” he said uncomfortably.

The lack of confidence in the guy’s voice prompted both Yuto and Chinen to turn to Yamada in surprise.

Seeing their friend looking quite uneasy, Yuto said “Come of it! You’re Yamada Ryosuke! Why would you suddenly be shy at the presence of another famous name? Besides, you two have already worked with each other right?”

When Yamada still had not said anything, Chinen chuckled “I think Yama-chan likes Shida Mirai-san.”

“What?!” Yamada exclaimed immediately. “You’ve got to be joking!”

Throwing each other a knowing look, both Yuto and Chinen grinned before turning half their attention to the beautiful young girl talking animatedly to her friends a few feet away while the other hald stayed with their still uncomfortable friend.

“She’s gotten really pretty, right?” Chinen asked Yuto meaningfully.

“Yeah, really pretty!” Yuto seconded with an evil grin. “And to think we’re going to be classmates for the next 3 years, unless someone, of course, does something crazy like transferring out.”

“Yeah, things could really get interesting!” Chinen nodded eagerly.

Yamada could only sigh. “You guys…”
-----

“Looks like your prophecies did come true,” said the third guardian from before as he and the respective guardians of two of the humans they were observing. “He didn’t become her childhood friend and he became a Johnny,” he added just as they saw the human’s class adviser enter the room and assign seats, putting Yamada and Shida somewhere at the back, right next to each other.

“But it looks like it didn’t reach your desired results,” he added as he turned around to face the two guardians with him. “Apparently, the two of them working together wasn’t a fluke after all.”

The boy’s and the girl’s guardian, after all, had been very adamant in saying that the humans working together previously was meaningless.

“Not necessarily,” said Shida’s guardian. “They’re just classmates. There are a lot of other good-looking boys in that class. She could take interest in any of them.”

“Yeah,” said Yamada’s guardian. “He can take interest in other girl. There are a lot of other girls in there too. He may end up with that Mariya-girl.”

The third guardian shrugged, well aware that both guardians have already given up deep within themselves but just continued with the front out of principle, before he turned around to face the humans again. As guardians, their timeline works differently from humans, which is why the scene before them is already a few weeks later for the humans they are watching.

And he couldn’t help but end up grinning with what they just saw.
-----

Shida was shaking her head as she pushed herself to her feet the moment Yamada entered the room with the clock reading just a minute before their first class.

“Yamada Ryosuke! You’re almost late again!” she exclaimed once the boy stopped next to her.

“Aha! The keyword there is ‘almost’, so I’m still not!” Yamada replied cheekily. “I’m not yet late!”

Shida could only roll her eyes and sigh. And then she spotted the lousily tied necktie Yamada was wearing and she sighed again before reaching out to it.

“When will you learn to dress yourself properly? You’re costume designers must be having headaches because of you! I’m having headaches because of you!” she said.

“It’s all right,” Yamada smiled as he allowed her to fix him up. “I’ll give you some of my strawberries later.”

“Yeah, right,” Shida snorted. “The ones you’re going to take back the moment you finish up what’s left of your share.”

“Of course!” Yamada grinned. “I’m giving them to you so that you could give them to me. It’s the thought that counts.”

“You’re impossible!” Shida exclaimed, shaking her head in amusement.

“I know,” Yamada said as he closed his eyes and took in a deep breath. “Hmmmm…. You smile nice.”

Shida felt herself suddenly blushing at those words as she finished up fixing his tie in a hurry. Yamada, who still had his eyes closed didn’t see. Unfortunately for Shida though, it wasn’t the same for the rest of the class who had been watching them, it seems, from the start, without either of them noticing anything.

“Wow! This looks like a drama scene!” Yuto exclaimed. “Like a husband and wife scene during breakfast!”

Hearing the voice of one of his best friends, Yamada ended up opening his eyes and, upon seeing everyone looking at them, end up blushing too. This prompted the rest of the class to start chuckling and wolf-whistling.

“What?!” Yamada and Shida exclaimed almost simultaneously. But their hopes of having it all stop backfired as the cheers and calls got even louder.

Then, above the din, a voice that sounded suspiciously like Chinen’s called “Just kiss already!”

Yamada and Shida ended up looking at each other and snorting. Little did they know that deep within the heart and mind of the other was the very strong question of “What if?”
