Summary: It really was just supposed to be a fun run... and then things started changing it's course...
“Why am I not surprised?” Kuroki Meisa heard her friend, Inoue Mao, mutter beneath her breath.
The two of them, along with about a hundred other people are standing outside the Meiji University gym, preparing for the universities annual fun run, an event co-organized by the two women to help raise funds for the casualties of the Great Hanshin Earthquake a few years back. The two of them, along with some of the other staff involved were registering the participants and handing out the numbers when Meisa heard her say it.
“What?” Meisa asked, inching closer to her friend.
Mao was about to brush it off and pretend that it’s nothing when they caught each other’s eye.
“I was wondering why a lot of women signed up for today’s fun run…” Mao ended up admitting. “Turn’s out it’s because of him!”
Meisa didn’t need to ask who Mao’s referring to because she already knew and she needn’t ask how her friend found out that he’d be there because they’re already both hearing telltale signs of the guys presence, particularly the increased chatter of women around them.
“And let me guess,” she chuckled. “You didn’t know he was coming…”
“He said he wasn’t coming…” Mao corrected. “Something about a previous engagement or something…” she added grumpily.
Meisa chuckled. Especially because she didn’t know what her friend was irritated for, that the guy said he wouldn’t come because of something, or because the guy did come but did not inform her first.
“Argh!” Mao continued. “I don’t want to see him! You sign him in… See you at the starting line…” she cried and left before Meisa could say anything to that.
And right on time too because when Meisa turned back to the crowd, she saw the guy in question approaching her, a smile on his face.
“So, do I need to present my I.D. or something?” he asked when he approached her.
Meisa chuckled as she handed him a pen and pushed the log book for him to sign in.
“I heard your presence is completely unexpected…” she told the guy as he wrote down his own name, Matsumoto Jun.
Jun looked up and flashed her his signature smile.
“I was able to free myself…” he said as his eyes looked around them. “Where is she?”
“Where do you think?” Meisa grinned as he handed him his number, already used to the smiles other women swoon for.
Jun looked thoughtful for a few seconds before he flashed another grin.
-----
“He thinks because those women go for him, he’ll always have his way…” Mao continued muttering as she made her way towards the starting line of the marathon. “Well then, too bad for him I’m not like those women… No way…”
She’s referring of course to Jun, her childhood best friend, who just happened to have morphed into one of Tokyo’s most sought after bachelors (ergo, playboy) from the moment they both stepped into high school. Their friendship never really got affected, even as he turned into the ever playful heartthrob and she became the serious straight A student. But still, there are times when she just wants to hit the guy just so she could wipe the smug grin on his face.
And this is one of those times.
But then again, for the moment, she preferred not to see him.
Who she saw, though, was someone close to the two of them. His younger sister, Mirai.
“Hey…” she greeted in surprise to the high school student who’s stretching in preparation for the marathon, next to one of her friends. “You didn’t tell me you signed up for this…”
“Oh…” her friend, Ohgo Suzuka, smiled. “A few of our friends were doing this marathon too so we said, why not?”
“Besides, I thought I’d represent the Matsumoto line in this fundraiser…” Mirai added with a chuckle. “Seems like I’m not the only one here in the family though…”
“Yeah…” Mao smiled endearingly at the two younger girls before her eyes focused only on Mirai and added “About that… You also didn’t inform me that he was going to be here…”
“He wasn’t!” Mirai said in a serious tone, but then Mao looked at her with a look that plainly says ‘Yeah, right…’ and she ended up chuckling. “Well, at least that’s what he told me to tell you if I see you here… You saw him already then?”
“Unfortunately…” Mao sighed. “And here’s hoping it’d be the last I see of him today…”
Mirai and Suzuka just grinned.
-----
When Mao headed off to the starting line and Mirai and Suzuka remained a few meters back, the two younger girls were still in a good mood, Mirai particularly.
“Is she and your brother still not dating?” Suzuka asked her as both their eyes followed the direction Mao had headed to.
“When did they ever?” Mirai chuckled, rolling her eyes. “Or when will they ever? I don’t know which exactly… All I know for now is that they still think they’re just friends although everyone else close to them thinks otherwise…”
“They’d make a nice couple…” Suzuka smiled.
“Yeah…” Mirai agreed. “Besides, Mao-chan’s the only one who can handle my brother in his most arrogant and irritating nature…”
Suzuka chuckled, and then that chuckle turned into a grin when her eyes caught something. “Speaking or arrogant and irritating boys…”
Mirai’s eyes grew big as she followed her friend’s eyes and landed on a group of familiar boys.
“What is he doing here?!” she groaned.
“Well Mirai-chan, this fun run IS open for everyone…” Suzuka reminded her with a chuckle.
-----
“If I hadn’t known better, I’d say you’re avoiding me…” she heard him say in that annoying confident drawl of his and Mao couldn’t help but groan.
The marathon had already started about half an hour ago and they just about passed the halfway mark and she’d already lost Meisa minutes ago, maybe just a couple of minutes after they started even. But it was one of the things that she loves about marathons, it isn’t always about the competition. Most of the time, it’s about what happens before reaching the finish line.
It’s always a good place to see people she hadn’t seen in a while and meet interesting ones. Unfortunately, it also holds true for the ones she doesn’t feel like seeing.
“Who said you knew better?” Mao snorted without bothering to cast a look at the guy now matching her pace to her right.
“Oh come on… Are you still angry?” Jun asked playfully increasing his pace with half a step so that he can see Mao’s face clearly without really having to leave her side. When Mao just remained stoic, he continued “You obviously still are…”
“Glad to see that you’re not yet completely blinded by your ego…” she said before suddenly increasing her pace, weaving thru a couple of participants in her attempt to get away from her best friend.
But Jun, when he’s determined, is somewhat like a missile, a missile already locked on a target, no matter how mobile that target is. It didn’t even take him over a minute to get back on her side.
“Okay…” he started. “Would you believe when I say I’m really sorry I missed Thursday night’s meeting? Because I really am…” he said seriously.
Mao shook her head, a pout on her lips.
Thursday night was the final meet-up and pep talk for the organizers and some of the participants of the fun run and Jun promised that he would be there. It wasn’t that he’s really needed for the night but he insisted that he’d go, promised actually. But then again, he didn’t show up, didn’t send her any messages, or reply to the messages she sent him. She even tried calling at one point but the guy’s number was out-of-reach.
It wasn’t the first time Jun did that, go suddenly missing, and the first few times, she found out that it was because of a girl (the succeeding ones she didn’t bother finding out). She’s just miffed at him especially this time around because he was the one who made the promise but then didn’t keep it, at least that’s what she tells herself.
“The whole point of making a promise is that so you’re going to keep it…” she lectured in a low voice so that they wouldn’t attract anymore attention from the other participants of the marathon. A few had already been looking at them curiously (some girls irritatingly at Mao).
“For the record, I didn’t intend to break that promise…” he replied, now walking backwards so that he’s facing her. “But something came up and I needed to do that first… By the time I was finished, you guys already went home…”
Mao’s first big mistake was that she allowed her eyes to look at his face, her second was when she allowed herself to drown in his eyes. The guy really had beautiful eyes. It was the part of his face she’d always liked the most.
Before she knew it, she sighed and Jun’s smile widened victoriously as he jumped back to her side so that they were walking side-by-side again.
“I knew you’d understand…” he exclaimed. “And, just for the record, I had to miss Thursday night so that I could get myself free today… And I even managed to promote this run…”
Raising an eyebrow at him, she chuckled “So you’re saying that I actually even owe you right now?”
“Yeah… You can say that…” Jun said triumphantly before he ended up grinning as she too smiled.
“Why do I keep up with you?” she wondered allowed and supposedly, rhetorically, as she shook her head endearingly at the guy.
But of course Jun would have to reply and it was a reply she wasn’t really expecting.
“Because you love me…” Jun smiled, leaning closer to her a bit to emphasize his point and Mao suddenly felt her heart skip a beat. Somehow, she suddenly found herself breathing in Jun’s scent, he wasn’t wearing a cologne, at that close distance. “And that’s a perfectly natural thing because I love you too…”
Mao turned to look at him in surprise and she saw that he was looking at her seriously and at the back of her head, Mao was amused that either of them are yet to bump into someone when they’re not looking at where they’re heading to as they jogged.
Before that moment could or would expand though, they both suddenly felt an arm landing each over their shoulders and a tall, lean body right between them.
“I know there’s a reason why I never believed that you two are just friends…” Oguri Shun, one of their friends who’s a bit more like Jun but different in the sense that he has a girlfriend and is happy with her, chuckled between them. “So are you two getting together now?”
“Don’t be ridiculous…” Mao said without much conviction as Shun removed his arms over their shoulders.
Jun snorted but chose not to react to it when he turned to his friend and asked instead “Where’s Yu?” referring to Shun’s girlfriend.
“In Osaka, for a shoot…” Shun said simply and both Jun and Mao understood, Yu’s a model after all. But before either of them could say anything, Shun added “So, I guess I better get going then and leave you two lovebirds to iron things out…” before he increased his pace and in a split second was lost in the crowd of runners before them.
Jun and Mao ended up looking at each other to chuckle at their friend’s antics. But that chuckle didn’t last long.
-----
She’s lost Suzuka.
That’s the recurring thought in Mirai’s head as she made her way through the marathon, her head and eyes turning here and there in her attempt to catch sight of the familiar figure of her best friend. The two of them started the race together but somehow, maybe somewhere during the turn, she lost the girl.
Technically speaking, she’s all right running the race all by herself because essentially, she isn’t alone. She’s even seen some familiar faces in the crowd (though they’re relatively older than her). But Suzuka had the backpack that held both their water bottles. And she’s feeling a bit thirsty already.
She was still craning her neck in attempt to see if her friend is somewhere in the group in front of her when she felt a body stepping next to her and heard a familiar voice drawling “She’s with Yuto-kun…”
Mirai had to stop herself from groaning aloud. It was the last voice she wanted to hear from the person she least liked in her class, Yamada Ryosuke.
When she turned around to face the guy, she was already half-hoping that she’s just hallucinating, a by-product of the combined efforts of her worrying about her friend and her thirst. But he really is there, jogging alongside her in that smug posture of his.
In more ways than one, he reminded her of his older brother, Jun. The guy is a playboy, or at least being groomed as the next big playboy, some would even go as far as saying he should be an idol (same thing her brother has heard a million times). But while she loves her brother dearly, she’s just irritated by this one.
Yamada, in her own description, is arrogant and she sees him as acting (most of the time) as though every girl in class has a crush on him. Well, that’s not exactly very far off the mark either since even Suzuka has a crush on him, though not bigger than what she feels for the guy she’s with if Yamada is to be believed. She always makes it a point to make clear though that it’s just almost every girl in class. She never harbored any admiration for the guy, no matter how good-looking or charming he supposedly is.
And while she’s feeling grateful that she, somehow, found out where her friend is, she still said “And you’re here because?”
“This is a fun run, Mirai-chan, you’re supposed to be having fun…” he grinned instead, calling her that name just because he knew it irritates her hearing it from him.
“I am having fun…” Mirai snorted and putting on a huge effort to add “before you showed up…” because she didn’t want him to think that he’s succeeding in irritating him. Personally though, she’s not sure if he’s succeeding in it or not because while she’s slowly feeling hot around the head, neck and face, she’s not sure if it’s because of the heat (and her lack of water) or him.
“Sure you are…” he simply said and they went on in that jog-walk of theirs, him matching her steps and pace even though she knew that he could go a lot faster than that.
And it didn’t take long before she suddenly found his hand stretched out in front of her with his water bottle. In surprise, she turned around to look at him.
“Looks like you need this…” he told her nonchalantly.
She was just about to brush it off and say that she can manage when she felt her throat really running dry and it almost hurt just by attempting to speak. She threw him a suspicious look first though.
“I didn’t poison it! Promise!” he chuckled and she ended up grinning as she took the bottle about 3/4ths full because he must have drank already.
She was just taking a gulp when he suddenly added “Might have placed a love potion on it though…” and it’s a mystery that Mirai didn’t end up choking and sputtering the water out as she turned around to look at him.
There was a smile on his face but he looked serious too. And before Mirai could think of saying anything, she felt the cool water running down her throat and she couldn’t help but chuckle a bit until the two of them ended up laughing.
-----
“I thought Mirai-chan and Yamada-kun didn’t get along?” Mao wondered allowed.
She and Jun were already at the sidelines by the finish line, having just finished to marathon together a few minutes ago.
“Huh?” Jun asked in confusion as he continued wiping the dripping face off his face and neck with her towel since he conveniently forgot to bring one because she has one anyway.
“Nothing…” Mao said quickly, shaking her head but it didn’t stop him from raising his head and looking at the finish line area where people continue streaming pass, all of whom completely enjoyed that they finished the race, and where Mirai and her classmate is just about at.
It was actually one of the last scenes Mao would ever think of expecting, especially considering how rarely Mirai acknowledges the boy’s presence. Mao didn’t think that she hates him, just that she considers his presence dismissible.
But she’s seeing the two now, walking side by side as they headed towards the tent to sign in that they’ve finished the race and they were talking and smiling and laughing. He even waited for her to finish signing in before they left the tent together.
That’s when Jun growled “What is she doing with him?”
“Oh come on…” Mao chuckled although she understood his sentiment. Jun would of course be familiar with Yamada, especially with the kid being considered as the successor to the throne he once held in high school. And of course, Jun’s protective instincts would kick in. “They’re not doing anything wrong…”
“Okay…” Jun continued, his eyebrows still furrowed. “Let me rephrase the question… Why is he with my little sister?”
“There’s nothing wrong with it!” Mao repeated, chuckling. “It could be that he’s just being friendly… It’s not necessarily more than plain friendship… He might be feeling towards Mirai-chan what you feel for me…” she said in attempts to placate the guys temper.
But instead of mollifying Jun’s anger, it only seemed to worsen it as his face grew darker.
“Then he’s dead…” he declared.
Mao’s eyebrows furrowed and she forgot to laugh. “Wait, he’s dead for wanting to be platonic with your sister?” she asked in confusion.
“Who said I just want to be platonic with you?” Jun returned and Mao was taken aback.
“Wait… What?” she exclaimed as she examined his strong facial features. She wanted to think he’s just joking again but his eyes are serious. “What kind of joke is that?” she said instead although her heart suddenly raced again as though she’s in the midst of a dash and not resting after a marathon.
“An ironic one…” Jun said as he shook his head. Anger is no longer visible there but there seemed to be a touch of dejection. “Since you think I’m joking when I’m not…” he added before pushing himself to a stand to head towards the table that’s offering refreshments.
Jun was just about half-way there when Mao caught up with her senses and she realized what his friend might be saying. Catching up to the guy a few steps before the refreshments table, she pulled him to face her.
“Wait, are you trying to say what I think you’re trying to say?” she asked when Jun finally faced her.
Jun looked at her straight and she was half-expecting him to burst into laughter and say “Gotcha!”, instead, he said “What do you think am I saying?”
Mao almost stopped herself from rolling her eyes. She recognizes the signs, knew the pattern by heart. Jun would always answer her question with a question if they’re talking about a topic that’s potentially huge and could and would affect their friendship (like when she said she might accept her cousin’s offer that she go to New York and study there for a bit). Most of the time, that conversation ends with a stalemate.
This time though, Mao’s not prepared for that kind of result.
“You tell me what you’re trying to say…” she told him with finality and Jun looked at her exasperatedly in her eyes.
The guy was never one for words when it comes to his affection after all, which is why she always finds herself amused that he’s a huge playboy despite his words (or lack thereof).
And then he sighed.
“The only reason why you’re the only woman I’m allowing to run rings around me and make me feel so anxious because you’re angry or annoyed with me is because you’re more than a friend to me…” he said.
Narrowing her eyes at the guy and pouting her lips, “That doesn’t exactly explain anything…” Mao said though she could feel her heart elating and she almost gasped but it wasn’t exactly the words she needed, wanted, to hear.
Jun rolled his eyes though it is plain and clear that he knew that she understood what he meant. Before Mao could open her mouth again though, he pulled her by the waist, and in the midst of that crowd, which may or may not include his sister and her sister’s classmate, he kissed her full on the lips.
-----
Much, much later after that kiss (and a lot of cheering and jeering from the witnessing crowd), Jun and Mao found themselves in the second floor of a 7eleven store to smoothen things out on the change of their relationship.
They were quite a bit caught up with what just happened that they didn’t even notice the 2 pairs at the far corner of the room, occupying a booth the same way they are.
“I thought your brother and Inoue Mao-san are just friends?” Yuto asked as he, Yamada, Mirai and Suzuka watched the couple in somewhat a deep conversation with their hands linked.
Yamada and Mirai caught each others eyes and they both chuckled, having witnessed her brother’s bold display at the finish line.
“I never believed that…” she chuckled. “Seems like, so did they…”
-----THE END-----
the number they gave me wasn't exactly what i was expecting, and i mean that in a good way...

and so, the bonus fic! :)
TITLE: Being With a Johnny (and How It Changed Everything)

AUTHOR'S NOTE: still for
misswoodihut and
chunamie ... :) (same pairings and thus) same reason as the story above above... :); might be considered as two drabbles or really (just like what i did) one one-shot...
Summary: She didn't really think he'd play a huge role in her life...
Her age: Turning 18
She wasn’t expecting for him to play a huge part in her life.
Really, she didn’t.
It wasn’t like he was the biggest name personality she’d ever worked with in a drama, nor was that drama they worked in together being the biggest one in her relatively long career for her age already. Really, she was a lot more known playing the teen-age mother of Miura Haruma’s character’s baby. In fact, she could easily say that she’s his senior in the industry.
But then again, he and the group he belonged in just happened to belong to the biggest name in the list of the country’s talent agencies, and that alone made it huge.
And then of course there’s the fact that he’s just practically a day (though technically speaking, maybe even less than that) older than her and as it was already as if they were linked from birth. And it sure didn’t help negate that impact when she enrolled in her high school and found him in the same school, in the very same class she’s in along with a few of his friends.
If ever, it only expounded on it because she slowly learned things about the guy that’s not seen on T.V. or read in magazines. And before she knew it, she found him to be one of the reasons why she always looks forward to her time in school, although she loves school nonetheless, and she really does love studying. She found school a lot more entertaining because he’s there.
And during those times when she has to miss class because of work, or he (and his friends) does because of his (their) own, she always looks forward to that day (it’s already marked in her calendar) when they could all get together in their homeroom again and play around and have fun and she’d get to see him in that signature smirk of his again. He’s also the reason why, though she isn’t really one for strawberries, she would end up bringing some every now and then because, really, obsession is the only term appropriate for his liking of the fruit.
And the very same reason why she stands up and shakes her head exasperatedly (and slightly endearingly) just before the bell rings for the first period because he comes in just in the nick of time and his necktie is not on properly. Again. And he’s waiting for her to straighten it up for him which she always does, in the midst of wolf-whistles and catcalls from their classmates and friends (which they just ignore) just before their teacher enters.
And when the teacher enters, he’d say about 60%of the time “Chinen Yuri, Yamada Ryosuke” sometimes with “Nakajima Yuto” or “Shida Mirai” or the names of their other classmates all mixed and matched “Since you missed yesterday’s class, I hope you’ve already asked your other classmates about your assignment which would be due this weekend…”
And Yuri and Yuto and Mirai would nod and so would Yamada but Shida would notice the quick sideways glance the guy would shoot to his friends or her and she’d know he isn’t aware of it yet.
And Mirai knew what it meant, that he’s going to pester her all throughout recess and lunch break about it even if Yuri or Yuto (or really, any one of their classmates) could and would provide the same information.
Her age: 24
She didn’t really think he’d make that great of an impact in her life.
Well, technically speaking, that’s not exactly true. She knew by the time she found out she’d be acting against him that a lot of things would change. But really, she thought that those changes would just take effect because of the role she’s taking in the drama, the lead role. She’s had significant roles in the past, but none as significant as playing that character, especially considering her supporting cast and how big the drama was being projected.
And true to what was being promoted, the drama was big, and if truth be told, bigger than any of them ever expected. Soon it spawned a season 2 and before she knew it, they were filming a movie that would showcase their characters’ supposed great love for each other.
She was no longer that kid in Kid’s War, or known as some actress playing this role in this drama. Almost everyone in the country knew her by her stage name or the name of her famous character. Producers and directors lined to have her in the cast, her projects piled up, especially as she prioritized her schooling over other projects.
And if truth be told, it wasn’t exactly just the drama that caused all those. She’s well aware that a big part of the reason was the guy she was acting with.
First off, he was already some big named idol even before their drama started, a part of a group that’s under what easily could be said as the most dominant acting agency in the country. He’s had big and successful projects in his belt already, all while aged lower than 25. And he was a perfectionist.
And this is why she strived hard to prove herself.
But it didn’t end with just her career. Soon she found him playing another significant role, this time, in her life. And there’s no denying how significant that role now is.
He’s her biggest fan (or so he claims), her best friend, her best competition, her pillow, her stuff toy, and her lover all rolled in one.
He’s also the reason why she sometimes wakes up in the middle of the night, wondering and worrying if he’s home already or if he’s still in practice or shooting with his four best friends who’re also his group mates. The reason why she often worries if he’s overexerting himself again over his work or if he’s already eaten.
The reason why she would suddenly just end up smiling because she remembered something sweet he’d done or said. The source of her inspiration, motivation, and at times, heartaches.
And the very same reason why she suddenly reached for the remote and turned off the T.V. even though Shun was watching the show with her in her greenroom because he kissed his co-star and she’s feeling all jealous and pout-y because of it even though she knew it’s in the script and because of the drama.
The very same reason Shun continued laughing and grinning at her up until Director Ishii called action and she and Shun started acting again as the vet and his assistant.
