TITLE: Against the Ghost of You
CHARACTERS: Ikuta Toma, Horikita Maki, Yamashita Tomohisa, Matsumoto Jun, Inoue Mao
PAIRING: Toma/Maki, Yamapi/Maki, Jun/Mao
RATINGS: PG
DISCLAIMER: The only thing i own in this story is the plot...
SUMMARY: Maki is the type of girl who loves with all her heart. Toma is a boy who’ll do anything for the girl he loves. Sounds perfect, right? It would, or should, except that they’re both caught in some sort of a one-sided love affair.

And then there’s Yamapi, who thought and says he came back to help Maki move on. Except that, maybe, that’s not all there is to it. Especially since his return started a rollercoaster ride for the ones he left behind.

This isn’t a typical love triangle. In fact, it shouldn’t even be considered as a love triangle. Because no one should, and could, ever be made to go against, and win against, literally, the ghost of a past lover.

“You went down to talk to her again, didn’t you?” Ryo asked casually from where he was seated on a big boulder with his back turned to the Pool of the Living, the large body of water in the “other” world that serves as their sole link back to Earth.

And right at that moment, Yamapi rose from the pool, his body appearing to be dripping with water as he did, the droplets falling back to the water and those still on his skin looked a little hazy, and so is the body those droplets are clinging to.

“You were watching me again Nishikido-kun?” Yamapi asked instead, allowing his fingers to run through his hair as if to shake away the water from there, even though he doesn’t even appear to be wet.

“Like I needed to…” Ryo snorted as Yamapi stepped next to him. “She visited?”

“Yeah…” Yamapi couldn’t help but smile. “She stayed there for a bit… She would have stayed there longer if that Toma guy wasn’t with her…” her added, a slight frown and hints of annoyance entering his hazy but otherwise handsome features.

Ryo shrugged as he pushed himself to full height, which was still at least a full five centimeter shorter than Yamapi. But Ryo’s features weren’t hazy like Yamapi’s. His features are actually quite transparent already.

“And I’m guessing she replied to you… And of course, you replied to her…” he said as he started to head towards the area they often call the “eye”.

The “eye” is actually just a part of that vast world only the likes of them, ghosts to be specific, are capable of entering, along with the Pool of the Living. None of them in there really knows what the other parts of their world is, or if there are any other parts, it’s as if both the Pool of the Living and the “eye” just stretches on endlessly when someone tries to wander around.

And while the Pool of the Living is where they access entry into the human world, the “eye” is where they mostly spend their endless time. Basically, the “eye” is where countless (and literally countless because Ryo tried counting them before) birdfeeder-like basins are that serves as the ghost’s greatest aids in accomplishing their “duties”.

Ghosts, after all, after being just a ghost for a considerable number of years and considering the circumstances, will not just be ghosts. They’re given the task of looking out for a certain human being still alive back on earth. Basically, those kinds of ghosts are the ones that turn into the guardians, the extra-terrestrial beings that continue to guide every human being on earth, whether that human knows it or not. And that basically is what Ryo is; a guardian.

Yamapi, for his part, is, at least, a year short to be given the title, the responsibility, and the opportunity to become one, not to mention that he hasn’t accomplished certain requirements yet.

Ryo was just about to touch the water on one of those unattended basins to peer into what his “human” is doing when Yamapi spoke up, his voice sad.

“Of course I did… But it’s not like she heard me…”

Ryo turned around immediately and looked at the younger ghost, as if to guarantee that he heard him right. But when Yamapi simply continued looking on sadly, he laughed. It wasn’t just a little chortle, or a snigger. It was a full blown laugh, with his head thrown back and all. Even his features turned a bit more solid, hazy-like, like Yamapi’s, although he returned to looking transparent when he was done laughing.

“That wasn’t funny!” Yamapi said as he continued to pout.

“Of course it was…” Ryo replied. “You sounded like you were hoping she’d hear you… This, may I say, is quite ridiculous on its own already, mainly because of the fact that back in her world, you are already dead... Or have you forgotten?”

“How could I?” Yamapi asked. “How could I forget that I’m already dead when the only place I was able to see her in for the past three years is when she visits my grave?”

Ryo shrugged. “That’s part of the rules, you know that…”

“Yeah…” Yamapi sighed. “This is why I’ve really been looking forward to the arrival of this day ever since I found out about the rules…” he added, a small smile on his lips. “Tomorrow, I finally get to visit her elsewhere, like her shop…”

“But you’ve seen her shop…” Ryo said, gesturing towards the basin in front of them where he had allowed Yamapi the chance to peek at the lives of those he left behind, especially his girlfriend.

“Yeah… But now I can actually go there…” Yamapi smiled as he wandered off.

Ryo didn’t stop him, especially because the guy is in no way capable of wandering off far. He followed him with his eyes for a minute though, which was quite an easy thing to do because Yamapi’s hazy figure stands out of the generally transparent ones that roams the place; at the moment, there are only a relatively few ghosts who’re still hazy like Yamapi.

He could see that there was almost a skip in his step as he walked around. And Ryo shook his head. He knew what Yamapi meant when he said he’d been looking forward to this day.

Because if Earth has a long list of slightly (and not so slightly) ridiculous rules, the “other” world also has it’s fair share. One of those rules for the “other” world is that which says no ghost can or will be able to visit any other place on earth, except that part which still has his body. That certain rule is in effect until that ghost’s 3rd anniversary of death. Someone once reasoned that, maybe, it’s because by that time, the ghost’s earth body would have disintegrated into dust, completely or almost there.

The day after the third anniversary though, the ghost is allowed to visit other places as well.

For Yamapi, that day would be would be tomorrow.

Ryo couldn’t help but sigh because knowing the younger ghost as he did (he’d been assigned to orient him into the “other” world when he first came there), he knew the gist of what Yamapi had in plan. Personally, he doesn’t think that it’s a good idea but he isn’t going to stop him. Part of that reason is because no ghost can stop any other ghost from doing anything or going anywhere he pleases (only the likes of St. Peter is allowed that), but mostly because while he thinks it’s potentially dangerous, it might be exactly what Yamapi needs.

That was the last thought in his head before he turned to touch the basin with his finger to show him what his “human” is now doing.
