TITLE: Learning from the Yoda

CHARACTERS: Matsumoto Jun, Inoue Mao, Takaki Yuya, Shida Mirai, Yamashita Tomohisa
PAIRING: Jun/Mao
RATINGS: PG
DISCLAIMER: The only thing i own in this story is the plot...
AUTHOR'S NOTE: this isn't a one shot but it isn't a novel either... it's somewhere in between... and i promise i'm not dropping One Chance...
SUMMARY: she needed to learn about men to avoid getting hurt severely ever again... his brother said he knew the right choice...

Chapter 1

“I never thought I’d be seeing you again after all these years…” Mao exclaimed.

She and Jun were seated at one of the private booths by the glass wall. Yuya had already explained to her how the two men had regained contact with each other before he left. It turns out that Mirai, Jun’s little sister, was going to the same university as Yuya’s and the two bumped into each other there.

“I never disregarded the thought… After all, Japan’s not that big…” Jun chuckled. “You’ve changed a lot… You’re no longer the little Mao-chan I used to know…”

“I grew up…” she smiled. “But I heard you haven’t changed… In fact, from what I heard, you just grew into what everyone thought you’d be…” (“He’s so good looking…” she used to hear the older people say. “I’m telling you, that kid would sure to grow up to be a ladies man…”)

“Just to a certain extent…” he shrugged. “And from what I heard, it seems like that extent I reached might be able to help you…”

“Argh…” Mao sighed. “How much did Yuya tell you anyway?”

Jun smiled sheepishly before taking a sip off his coffee. “Let’s just say that it’s about as much information as he used to tell me when we were just kids…”

Mao groaned, blushing a bit. Considering the fact that Yuya had always looked up to the guy and was very close to him, same way the Mirai had been close to her, she knew what he meant. “Too much, huh?”

He chuckled as he placed his coffee cup back on the table. “Look at it this way… You don’t have to go through the trouble and worry of telling me what had happened in the past and what lead you to this before I have to teach you…”

“Teach me?” she asked.

“Yeah…” Jun nodded. “Yuya-kun already told me that you wanted to learn the ways of men…”

“Yeah… About that…” Mao started uneasily, already having second thoughts with the supposedly good idea she had the last night.

“Oh come on…” Jun chuckled. “Don’t tell me you’re chickening out…”

“No!” Mao exclaimed, chuckling a bit. “Not chickening out… It’s just that it doesn’t sound like a very good idea after all…”

“That, absolutely, is chickening out...” Jun pointed out. “But I wouldn’t deny, I thought it was a ridiculous idea at first too…”

‘See…”

“But then I saw you and I changed my mind…” he continued, smiling at her. “I think it’d be fun teaching you…”

“You were never a good teacher…” she told him.

“That depends on the subject…” he smirked.

They both ended up laughing after she gaped at her for a full minute, unable to find the write words to express her amusement at the guy. It was to this upbeat situation that Nagano Hiroshi, her father’s former business partner and now hers, who’s still technically speaking the manager of their café (but had agreed to share the title with her), stopped by their table with two slices of scrumptious-looking cake.

“I came up with a nice and delicious new twist to my Hiroshi special and I thought I’d let you two try…” he announced as he set a slice each in front of them.

“Thanks Hiroshi-kun…” Mao looked up to him and smiled tenderly at the guy who she and Yuya look up to as their favorite uncle.

When Nagano simply smiled, eyeing looking at Jun with interest, she chuckled.

“Yeah… Hiroshi-kun, this is Matsumoto Jun, a childhood friend of ours… Jun-kun, this is Nagano Hiroshi, my father’s partner…” she introduced.

“Good afternoon sir…” Jun smiled, as he and Nagano shook hands. “It’s nice to meet you…”

“Likewise…” Nagano smiled before turning to Mao and looking at her meaningfully. He didn’t stay with them for long as he retreated to the kitchen.

“So…” Jun started as they watched Nagano return to the kitchen. “When do you want to start?”

“Start?”

“The lessons of course…” Jun smiled, forking a small piece of the cake to put in his mouth.

“Why are you so determined to teach me?” she asked curiously.

“I’ve been what Mirai-chan says as an ‘incorrigible ladies man’ for so long, I thought I’d give it a try redeeming myself through you…” he said simply.

“Really?” Mao chuckled, raising her eyebrows at him. But when Jun simply shrugged, she smiled. “Do I get to decide what you teach me?” she asked playfully.

Jun regarded her for a second with a smile before he shook his head. “No. I’m the teacher, I decide what I teach…”
-----

“I can’t believe you never told me you were in contact with Jun-kun…” Mao exclaimed while Yuya helped her set the table for their dinner that night.

She was just about to walk Jun to his car after they’ve agree on their free time when Nagano popped in and suggested that Jun drive her home too, sighting that she needed rest after an up-and-down day. She knew what he meant, Nagano having seen her a bit forlorn, unintentionally recalling her ex boyfriend and the times they spent together, before Yuya popped in with Jun.

“You never asked…” Yuya simply shrugged.

Mao raised her an eyebrow. “How’d you met Mirai-chan anyway? And don’t tell me that it’s a small university…”

“She was at the library…” Yuya started.

“Library?! Since when did you frequent the library?!” Mao chuckled. And then her eyes bulged. “Wait a minute!”

“I am not courting her!” he objected, and by the sight of the relieved sigh his sister had just released, he knew he was on the mark.

“Good…” Mao exclaimed. “Especially considering the fact that she’s younger than you…”

“Like age has ever been an issue when it comes to stuff like that…” Yuya laughed. “Anyway, Yamada-kun would kill me if I even try to think about her that way…”

Mao was just about to skate through the topic as she sat down when she doubled back when the name registered.

“Wait… Yamada? Ryosuke-kun?” she asked, referring to the younger boy who’d been friends with Yuya ever since they became neighbors.

“Yep…” Yuya chuckled, sitting down too. “Anyway, so when’s the lesson starting?” he asked, changing topics.

“Tomorrow…” Mao sighed. “Which reminds me… I still have not forgiven you for telling him my whole love story!”

“What?!” Yuya said. “I just saved you from the task of painfully recounting your love woes…”

“You’re not being helpful…” Mao told him.

“Of course I am…” Yuya simply laughed.
-----TBC-----

and because i am a dork (like the title says), i came up with an off-shot featuring the pairing mentioned above... No, not the Jun/Mao pair... the Yamada Ryosuke/Shida Mirai pair set in the same AU setting following the story... please read... LOL

TITLE: Between a Rock and a Hard Place
CHARACTERS: Takaki Yuya, Yamada Ryosuke, Shida Mirai
PAIRING: Yamada/Shida
RATINGS: PG
DISCLAIMER: The only thing i own in this story is the plot...
AUTHOR'S NOTE: written because i am a dork... since it is an off shot of the above mini-novel, it is also AU and i thought i'd have fun with the pairing too...
SUMMARY: he liked her, that much was obvious... but Yuya also, somehow, enjoyed watching his pain... =D

Yuya couldn’t help but chuckle when he climbed under the sheets, having already stripped for the night, recalling Mao’s assumption that he’s liking Mirai. It was ridiculous, but not because of the age difference just like what his sister said. It was ridiculous because he only saw Mirai as a little sister.

Unfortunately though, Yamada neither knew nor believed that when it all started, especially considering the circumstances. But to be fair, none of it was his fault, not even the meeting up again with Mirai. That part is certainly Yamada’s.

The moment he caught sight of his younger friend, heading towards him at the school cafeteria, Yuya immediately looked around to search for something to hide his strawberries with, knowing the guy’s obsession with the red fruit. He didn’t find anything though, and it turns out that he needn’t to, since the guy didn’t even notice the fruit on his plate when he slammed his food tray on the table (thankfully, the food remained intact) and sat down opposite him, looking forlorn.

“I didn’t get her name…” Yamada growled before he could even ask.

“Who?”

“The pretty girl I bumped into earlier…” the guy continued, snapping his chopsticks apart with so much force that Yuya was amazed it actually broke off at the right place.

“What girl?” he asked, confused and slightly distracted.

“The girl I bumped into earlier!” he growled.

“Oh… Okay…” Yuya said, trying to pacify him. “What’s her name?”

This seemed to have made Yamada snap though since he slowly looked up to glared murderously at him.

“I said I didn’t get her name!” he growled in such a loud voice that the other students occupying the surrounding tables looked at them scandalously.”We’re you even listening to me?!”

Torn between feeling bad for the guy and being amused at his antics (because really, he’d never seen Yamada Ryosuke have any problems at the introduction phase with women—it’s the other phases that usually troubles him), he smiled sheepishly as he pushed to him his plate of strawberries, as a form of peace offering. He could see the internal battle waging within the guy’s mind before he gave up and took one to pop into his mouth. Though he did mellow down a bit, it wasn’t enough to completely cheer him up.

As it turns out, that girl Yamada was referring to was actually Mirai, but he didn’t get to find out that it is her until Yamada dragged him to the library because he saw her there again a week after.

“That’s her!” Yamada shouted from behind the shelf the two of them were hiding behind, pointing towards the reading area of the library. “That’s her right there!”

“Who?” Yuya asked, still winded up from being dragged there.

“The girl I was telling you about last week…” Yamada cried, pointing to one girl in particular, sitting alone on one of the tables with a few books in front of her.

Yuya had to say that Yamada was right, even at that distance, the girl obviously is pretty. She had a bit of an innocent look on her face as she focused on reading (although Yuya knew not to bank on that look since Yamada, as innocent as he looks, is far from innocent).

“How’d you find her?” he asked, bemusedly, before turning to the younger guy in amazement. “You’ve been searching for her haven’t you?!”

“So what?!” Yamada exclaimed. Before he could continue though, they heard someone clearing their throat behind them. Turning around, they saw that it was the librarian looking at them sternly, and they could do nothing else but bow slightly and smile. The librarian gave them one pointed look first though before leaving.

“Did you get her name?” Yuya asked in whispers as they left the bookshelf they were hiding behind to move closer to the girl’s table.

“No…” Yamada replied, looking at him as if he’d lost his mind.

“Then what are you waiting for?!” he cried. “Go ask for her name already!”

“I-I can’t!” Yamada stuttered.

“Come on, chicken!” Yuya sneered. This prompted Yamada to shove him, starting some sort of shoving match between the two of them.

The match, as silent as they tried to make it be, still attracted the attention of some people, the girl on the table in particular.

“Yan-yan?!” she exclaimed in a loud voice before remembering that she was in a library and lowered her voice immediately. The momentarily raised voice took both boys’ attention though as they turned to the girl, Yuya’s in particular, having not heard that particular name in ages.

“Mirai-chan?!” he exclaimed, noticing the girl’s similarity to one girl he used to always play with in the past, his jaws dropping while Yamada looked simply and utterly confused.

The girl’s eyes lightened up immediately as her jaws opened for an entirely silent shriek. She immediately stood up though and ran towards him for a hug with such force that he had to stagger back a bit when she wrapped her arms around his neck.

He knew that at that time, Yamada had already promised him an excruciatingly painful death in his mind. His eyes, narrowing at him in pain and jealousy, told him so, even if he didn’t dare say a word.

It took him quite a while to actually make Yamada believe his and Mirai’s history. He eventually had to accept it though, especially after Jun told him to be responsible for Mirai since he, Jun, can’t always be with his little sister.

Yamada’s no longer jealous of him though, especially after the guy mustered enough courage to actually ask Mirai out and confess. What he feels for him, at the moment, would most be akin to irritation, especially after finding out his position in Mirai’s life.

“I don’t see why you have to come with us!” Yamada said through gritted teeth as the two of them waited for Mirai outside the girl’s bathroom.

Yamada had invited her to Disneyland after Mirai expressed her wish to go to the place. She was ecstatic, of course, but Jun felt the opposite. In fact, he almost didn’t allow her to go.

“Well, it was either me or her brother, take your pick…” he smirked.

It was, the agreement Jun had with him after he told him about Mao’s predicament. It worked perfectly fine too since Jun really wanted to help his older sister and he also didn’t want Mirai to feel bad by not allowing her to go.

“Why does she have to have a chaperone anyway?” Yamada said instead, having been unable to answer back on the original argument. “I mean, we’re both 17 already!”

“That’s actually it…” Yuya chuckled. “She’s only 17… You’re both not off-age!”

“It’s just a date at an amusement park!” Yamada hissed. “What’s being off-age got to do with it?!”

“If you want to ask her out on a date, live with it…” he simply grinned.

Yamada didn’t respond though because Mirai came out of the girls’ bathroom at that moment. She was beaming when she looked into Yamada’s face and Yuya had this amused thought that he may just actually blend with the surroundings and none of the two would notice him. Mirai certainly seemed to have forgotten that he was even there when she held onto Yamada’s arm as they started to walk towards the rides and Yamada didn’t even seem to notice where they were heading to.

It didn’t take long for him to be remembered though since Yamada turned to him, his eyes panicked, after Mirai said she wanted to try the roller coaster and he knew why. Yamada, the lover boy, after all, is extremely afraid of heights and Mirai had just pointed to one of the highest risers there. It was pretty much like being caught between a rock and a hard place.

“Is there a problem?” Mirai asked, confused as she too, turned to him.

“Oh no… No…” he shook his head. “Why don’t the two of you get going?”

“You’re not coming?” Yamada managed to ask without his voice croaking much.

“Oh no…” Yuya smiled. “This is your ride…”

After all, despite the fact that he’d love to go on the ride too, he’d also very much enjoy watching Yamada’s pain from below (because he wouldn’t really notice that when he’s on the ride too), which he’s sure to do since he’s squirming on his feet already.

“Are you all right?” Mirai asked him, her free hand moving to touch his shoulder. The simple contact seemed to have strengthened Yamada for a while though since he looked into her expectant eyes and he smiled.

“Nothing… Let’s go?” he said, his face turning towards the ticket booth to avoid looking at the ride (or Yuya).

Mirai took that chance to glance questioningly at Yuya, to which he smiled and mouthed “fear of heights” without Yamada noticing. She ended up smiling as she removed her hand from his arm only to lower it and entwine his hand with hers (a first time). Yamada’s eyes grew large as he turned to her but she looked away, smiling herself. That’s when Yamada turned towards him and smiled weirdly. That’s when Yuya mouthed to him “You owe me…”

He thought that that image would be the strongest image for him for the night. He immediately changed his mind though the moment Yamada and Mirai stepped out of the ride and saw Yamada trying hard not to lose his footing. He decided he’d distract Mirai with cotton candy to give Yamada time to run to the boys’ room and throw up.

His thankful-but-about-to-throw-up look was the last image on Yuya’s mind when he finally got to sleep.
