Chapter 1: The Fall (Literally)
“Mabo-kun said it’s true…” Maki started when she and Mao met up at the lobby after clocking out from work. “This really is Hiro-san’s last week…”
For quite a while now, they have been hearing rumors that their highly respected general manager, who’s also the eldest son of the Matsumoto Masayuki, president and CEO of the Matsumoto group, would be leaving his post at MSMT. This rose when Masayuki’s half-brother, Yamaguchi Tatsuya, the Matsumoto Group’s current Executive Vice President, announced that he’d be resigning from his post to enjoy his life more.
It’s been said that Yamaguchi had personally endorsed his nephew to take his place, which isn’t quite a problem too since other than being MSMT’s general manager, Hiro has also taken his place as one of the more prominent members of the Board of Directors for a few years now. However, there had been no further announcements made with regards to the topic and neither had their general manager shown any signs that he’d be leaving the agency.
“Really…” Mao sighed, looking a bit sad. If Mabo, Matsuoka Masahiro, says it’s true, it most probably is since he heads the production department, where Maki’s a trainee director. “Who’s taking his place?”
“He doesn’t know too…” Maki added. “Oguri-san’s a strong candidate since he’s assistant GM but he’s saying the second son could be flown in too to take his Hiro-san’s place… Plus I haven’t heard any rumors at the Media Services that there’d be a promotion for their head…”
“Yuyan’s older brother?” Mao asked. “Isn’t he in London or something? I don’t think I’ve ever seen him since we started here 3 years ago…”
“I don’t know… Never saw him too…” Maki shrugged. “Anyway, Erika-chan’s going on a date with Ryo-chan so I’m going to the mall, want to come?”
“I can’t…” Mao smiled apologetically. “Toma-kun called earlier and said he wanted to show me something… I already said I’d go…”
“Ahh… Of course…” Maki sighed. “He’s picking you up then?”
“Yeah…” Mao replied as she rummaged through her bag. “Shoot! I forgot my keys at my station… Wait for me here!” she exclaimed as she broke into a run to reach the elevator before its door closed as Maki cried
“Hurry up! I don’t want to have to wait here with that guy!”
-----
“Mao-chan, what are you doing back?” Aiba asked when she stepped out of the elevator onto the floor that their department shares with the Media Services Department and saw him standing there. “I thought you went home already?”
“I forgot my keys Aiba-kun…” Mao smiled sheepishly, bowing to her boss slightly. “I left it at my station…”
“Hurry up then!” he chuckled. “I’m going to bet your date’s waiting for you downstairs already…”
“I don’t go on dates Aiba-kun…” she reminded him playfully, bowing one last time before she ran towards where her workstation is, still in disbelief that she left her keys of all things. She still heard Aiba chuckle at her in disbelief though.
It didn’t take her long to find it though since it was placed prominently next to her keyboard in her workstation where her bag usually is. It must have slipped when she left her bag there earlier that morning and she hadn’t noticed since they’ve been too engrossed in finishing their latest project, the concept for Fascio’s latest beauty item, a mascara.
Grabbing her keys, she felt her phone vibrating in her pocket, signaling a phone call. Whipping it out as she ran back to the elevator, she saw that it was from Toma.
Before she could answer it though, she felt her ankle twisting just as she reached the elevator door. She managed not to fall though because right at that moment, the elevator door opened and whoever was standing right next to the door reached out to grab her. It was to a sturdy pair of arms that she fell, instead of the cold floor.
“Are you okay?” she heard him ask as he helped her to her feet. “Can you stand?”
“Yeah…” she replied, slightly breathless from her almost fall. After making sure that she can actually stand on her own two feet without anyone’s assistance, she looked up only for her breathe to be momentarily taken away again.
Standing in front of her was a guy she could easily say to have one of the most dazzling eyes she’d ever seen. It was the first thing that caught her attention, before her eyes would even move to the rest of his face.
“Are you all right?”
The guy asking her the question again stopped her from further examining his eyes as she felt a small blush creeping up her cheeks. He must have seen her examining him. Thankfully, no one else was around.
“Oh, y-yeah…” she stuttered. “Thanks for helping me out…”
“Are you sure you can walk on your own?” he asked and she noticed for the first time that he was holding the elevator door open with his left arm.
“Yeah…” she repeated, smiling at him. “Thanks again…”
Seemingly convinced that she’s all right, he smiled too and nodded as he released the door from his hold.
“Okay then… Take care…” he said.
Mao could do nothing else but nod and smile, not knowing what to tell the guy. Before the door fully closed though, she caught a glimpse of Oguri Shun, MSMT Asst. GM and Media Services Department Head about to walk past the elevator only to stop when he caught a glimpse of the guy.
“Jun-kun?!” he exclaimed.
“Oguri Shun….” she heard the guy cry.
-----
“Are you all right?” Toma asked walking to her immediately the moment he saw her walk through the main door and saw her limp. “What happened to your feet?”
“I slipped…” Mao replied, leading towards Toma’s car with his assistance.
“What? I thought you’re done with tripping when we were kids?” Toma asked immediately, opening the door for her. “Where else were you hit?” he asked as he started inspecting her elbows and hands after having her sit at the passenger’s chair.
Mao laughed as he brushed him off her, remembering how often that scene occurred when they were just kids. She was quite a clumsy kid too when they were younger, and Toma had always been the one who checked on her after the fall.
“I’m fine Toma-kun…” she chuckled. “I managed to not fall this time…”
“Really?” Toma exclaimed, looking at her proudly. “Congratulations! You finally managed to achieve something you’ve always failed at as a kid!” he added jokingly.
Mao simply smiled, shaking her head a bit and not bothering to tell him that she didn’t do it on her own. Toma would be questioning her endlessly on who he is, or why he helped her and all that if she told him that some other guy helped her not to fall, especially since she didn’t even get his name and she’s sure that it’s the first time she’d seen him, although he looked oddly familiar.
“Have you seen Maki-chan?” she asked instead as Toma straightened up. “She was supposed to wait for me at the lobby…”
“Horikitty?” he asked. “Yeah… She was there but she left when she saw me…”
Mao raised an eyebrow at him as he closed her door before moving to the driver’s seat, aware of the bizarre annoyed friendship theme the two has. “What did you do again?”
“Nothing!” Toma exclaimed as he started the car. “I just smiled, then she said she’s gone…”
Mao shook her head at him. “I really don’t understand you and Maki-chan…” she sighed. “I mean, Erika’s your cousin and her best friend, I’m your best friend and her close friend but the two of you still don’t seem to really get along…”
“Stop trying to analyze us, Mao-chan…” Toma chuckled, throwing her a quick huge grin. “Horikitty and I have come to an agreement on what kind of friends we are or are not…”
“Sure… If you say so…” Mao sighed, shaking her head. “Anyway, where are you taking me?” she asked seeing that they seem to be heading out of Tokyo.
“You’ll see…”
-----
A quick knock on the door slightly distracted Hiro from the set of papers he was reading but it wasn’t enough for him to remove his eyes from it, simply calling “Enter!” without even looking up. There are only two people who’d most likely be entering his office at that time of the afternoon, especially considering that works over for 10 minutes now, his Asst. GM Oguri Shun or his father’s executive secretary, Nakai Masahiro, who would drop by every once in a while to give him papers as a member of the board.
It was the former, though, who poked his head in and, after making sure that he’s relatively not that busy, throwing the door open.
“Look who I found flirting downstairs…” he announced as he stepped in.
This immediately caught Hiro’s attention as he looked up from what he was doing especially since that announcement was followed by another person entering his office.
“I wasn’t flirting!” Jun protested goodheartedly as he entered the office. “I told you she slipped, I just helped her…” he told Shun before turning to Hiro and saying “And before you say anything else, I wasn’t late… I was here on time, I just happened to have passed by this guy downstairs and I wasn’t aware that you took the penthouse… The last time I was here, your office was at the fourth floor…”
“That was 8 years ago, Jun…” chuckled Hiro, shaking his head as he stood up and walked to the other side of the table, leaning there. “Things have changed around here… Anyway, who slipped?”
“One of the employees here, I think… I didn’t get her name…” Jun replied as he walked around the room, examining the fixtures Hiro himself had chosen from his office. “You’re getting old fashioned Ni-san…”
“Things really have changed!” Shun exclaimed, eyeing Jun in shock. “8 years ago, you’d have gotten her name, number, address, and a kiss in a flash! What did you do to the Matsumoto Jun I knew?!”
“Baka!” Jun laughed, shaking his head.
“Eh? Where did my real brother go?” Hiro asked, chuckling as he rode on Shun’s joke. “And to think Yuyan really looks up to you on that regard… Could it be that the most notorious Matsumoto is now tamed?”
“Haha… Funny…” Jun said sarcastically. “It’s good to see that the playful Hiro is still in there somewhere…” he told his brother. “I thought you’re really shaping up to be the next Matsumoto Masayuki…”
“You’d be surprised…” Hiro laughed, nodding at him assuredly. “Anyway, since you’re both here, I need both your inputs about a certain issue…” he added, returning to his table.
The two took it as a hint for them to move towards the table, occupying the two visitors chair set there.
“This is the profile of a prospective client…” Hiro continued, handing them each a folder as they both took their seats. “Do you have any ideas?”
“164?” Shun exclaimed in disbelief the moment they opened the folder. “164 is our prospective client?!”
“Yeah…” Hiro nodded. “That’s where I was last weekend… I met with the owner…”
“Why?” Jun asked as he continued reading through the file. “Blooming food company, good management… Looks like a good client…”
“I know it is…” said Shun. “I just never heard that its owner is searching for active promotion for his restaurant chain… After all, 164’s been attracting patrons with just the good word of mouth…”
“They’re opening nationally…” Hiro explained. “Which is why Nagano-san thought it’s about time they try proper advertising… He’s been meeting with some of the top ad agencies in the country and I think it’d be a good and challenging project for the next MSMT management if we get it…”
“What are the demands anyway?” Shun asked, fully dropping the jesting form he’d shown earlier. “Any specifications or we get to decide for everything?”
“That’s where the catch is…” Hiro sighed, getting to his feet again as he walked towards the window. “The instructions were simply surprise and please me… From what I’ve learned in this business, it’s easier to please coy businessmen than the pure ones… Unfortunately or otherwise, Nagano-san, belongs to the latter group…”
“Basing on this profile, his business targets everyone, kids, teens, families, friends, lovers…” Jun shrugged, setting the file on the table. “Play it simple. A commercial that shows it’s good for everyone… Then hire a model or artist who’s well liked and accepted in most circles, someone who’s got credibility… If the owner’s as pure as you say he is, I’m pretty sure he’d want to keep it real…”
Complete silence met that long statement of his, making Jun frown as he turned to the two older men.
“What?!”
“Nothing…” Shun shrugged, coughing a bit before turning to Hiro with a huge smile on his face. “He’s got a good point… And I know the perfect actress for the job…”
“Yeah… You’re both right…” Hiro said, smiling in approval at Jun before he ended up chuckling. “Both Mabo-kun and Aiba-chan would have a field day with this just in case…”
Already aware of who and what position the two names mentioned handles, Jun’s eyebrows creased. “Why?”
It’s Shun turn to laugh. “Let’s just say that while Mabo-kun likes working with the actress I have in mind, Aiba-chan has quite an amusing history with her…”
