Chapter 3:
Matsujun felt all the blood drained from his head the moment he saw that headline. True, it isn’t his problem to deal with, but both Yamapi and Maki are his close friends. There’s no way he wouldn’t be affected by it, especially since Yamapi had admitted that he was the only one he told so far.
He took a few minutes to compose himself, sitting first on the couch, before returning to the article.
Popular actress Horikita Maki was seen leaving the office of a known celebrity gynecologist two days ago. The doctor reportedly informed the actress that she is pregnant when she went for a check-up after feeling “weird” the past few weeks, not eating much and looking quite paler than usual, hoping that the doctor could help her feel better.
The father of the child, apparently, is Ikuta Toma, popular Johnny’s talent, who had previous worked with Horikita in the drama series Hanazakari Kimitachi-e, along with the drama’s SP. Accordingly, the two had been closer with each other since then and was reportedly seen together two months ago, leaving the shoot for Horikita’s drama special…
The moment Matsujun saw Toma’s name, he did not know whether to breathe a relieved sigh or laugh. He was leaning towards the latter when Ohno spoke up.
“I don’t know what Sho-chan is so worked up about… It’s not like Cyzo’s anywhere near being a reliable source.”
Nino smirked, remembering the articles the paper had written about him. “Yeah. I’m pretty sure there’s no way I can be both gay and take out a number of women each night.”
Matsujun smiled his agreement, Cyzo had, after all, continuously written so many cooked up stories about them for them to trust it. But he could easily understand why Sho would be bothered by it. Ever since Sho and Maki acted together in Tokujo Kabachi, they have been good friends, with Sho being eternally grateful to his female co-star for helping him all through out the drama. And he knew that behind Nino’s unfazed look, the gamer would have probably messaged Maki already (or made Aiba send Maki a message that would represent them all).
In fact, if he hadn’t known that Cyzo only had half of its facts right on this story, he’d be personally calling Toma right now, demanding an explanation on why such a rumor would arise between him and Maki. He knew from personal experience that there would be no smoke if there’s no fire.
Just then, the door suddenly burst open and in came an extremely agitated Sho.
“So, you finally contacted her?” asked Aiba.
“Huh? Uhm… Yeah...” Sho answered distractedly. “Oh, good morning Jun-kun…” he added upon seeing their youngest.
“Good morning…” Matsujun greeted back, curious now as to what Maki told him. “What did she say?”
Sho looked confused for a moment before spotting the paper in Matsujun’s hands.
“I didn’t talk to her…” he admitted, taking a seat next to Aiba by the table. “Her phone was off so I left her a message…”
“Oh…”
“I don’t know why I even got myself bothered with that article…” Sho admitted after a few seconds, toying with one of his three newspapers. “Its not like Cyzo’s a reliable source.”
“You got that right!” cheered Nino, the sounds of his game announcing that he had just completed another level. “Even Masami simply laughs when she hears about these rumors Cyzo starts.”
“Yeah… How is she by the way?” asked Matsujun, having not seen her previous co-star in a while.
The answer, however, did not come from Masami’s boyfriend. It came from their tanned and almost-30 Riida.
“She’s doing great! Her cooking’s getting better and better every day!”
Matsujun, Aiba and Sho looked questioningly from Nino to Ohno, then back, amused both at the response and its source.
Nino, sensing the questioning looks thrown at him, paused his game and looked up to show an exasperated look.
“She likes him!” he complained. “She’s an ultimate Ohno fangirl! She even invites him over for dinner at MY place!”
It took a couple of seconds for the information to sink in before the rest of Arashi started laughing at how disgruntled Nino had looked.
“Too bad…” Sho said solemnly before he burst out laughing. “Looks like Arashi has a weird trend. Nino’s girlfriend likes Oh-chan and Jun-kun’s girlfriend likes Aiba-chan!”
This, of course, resulted to 2/5ths of Arashi sulking (and throwing annoyed glares at Sho) while the remaining 2/5ths looked torn between looking apologetic or smug. No one could deny what the caster said since it was all true.
Matsujun, however, noted the term Sho used, “girlfriend”. Yeah, everyone still sees him and Mao as an item even if they technically are no longer together, something that he was determined to change soon.
----------
“I bought fruits!” greeted Mao the moment Maki opened the door for her, raising the bag of fruits and groceries she had bought on her way to her friend’s apartment.
“You didn’t have to…” Maki smiled as she stepped aside to let her enter.
“Of course I do!” smiled Mao, allowing Maki to close the door as she went straight for her kitchen. “We can’t have our new mother get sick now, can we? So, how about some snacks?”
Maki smiled, hearing Mao bustling around her kitchen as she went to her living room and curl up on her sofa. It wasn’t the first time Mao invaded her kitchen like that and she knew that the older girl would join her as soon as she finished whatever she’s doing in her kitchen.
Three years ago, Mao and Maki officially met when they were both invited to a private gathering organized by Yamaguchi Tatsuya to celebrate the arrival of his child. Maki was invited by Toma while Mao came in with Matsujun. Maki remembered feeling extremely relieved when she saw the Hanadan pair enter; she had feared being out of place the moment she saw that only a handful of women were present (most of Gussan’s guests were his closest friends in JE) and none of whom she was familiar with, and though she knew most of the men, it still felt awkward. Three years later, they’ve become really close with one another.
In fact, Maki sees Mao as her sister, much like Meisa, except maybe that Meisa is the more hot-headed one while Mao is the calmer one. She trusts her well enough that it was Mao who was one of the first people Maki called after she left the hospital two days ago.
----------
“What’s wrong?” asked Mao the moment the door to Maki’s apartment opened and it revealed its owner looking quite lost. She came straight there when she received her message that night.
Maki looked like she was about to burst into tears when Meisa appeared beside her and guided her back to the living room, nodding her acknowledgement of Mao’s presence.
Still confused, Mao entered the apartment and closed the door behind her. She had always known Maki to be a strong and independent woman, with a steady and warm smile always ready even if she’s feeling really down. She had never expected to see Maki look the way she looked earlier, like she was a lost child who doesn’t know what to do or where to go.
“What’s going on?” Mao asked Meisa after the latter had guided their friend to the sofa, making her lie down.
“He’s gonna be dead!” said Meisa, looking straight at Mao like she really meant what she said
“Who?” asked Mao. “What happened?”
Ever since she’d known and become friends with Kuroki Meisa, she’d always known that the girl has a strong character, much more forceful than the mild and quiet character her best friend portrays. However, this would be the first time Mao would see her seethe her anger that much.
Meisa, who continued looking murderous, did not answer her question and merely gazed at the distraught form of their friend. Somehow, a part of Mao’s brain told her that the way Meisa looked right now seemed awfully familiar to her, like she’d seen it before.
Too familiar, since it was the same look Matsujun sported when the two of them went out one night for dinner and they saw Nagasawa Masami alone in a table, looking sad and lost. He realized why way sooner than she did, but eventually, she remembered; Nino had been rumored to have been seeing one of Masami’s close friends. They both agreed to invite her to join them instead, and the look on Matsujun’s face was the same as the one on Meisa’s when he asked Masami “Where is he?”
Mao shook her head in an effort to rid herself of her idol ex-boyfriend’s face but to no avail. She had never really succeeded in that regard since that profound face, in Aiba’s carefully chosen description, continues to reside in her every thoughts and dreams.
She realized immediately that it wasn’t the right time (or place) to dwell upon those thoughts when she turned to Maki and saw that silent tears were flowing from her eyes.
“Hey…” she said softly, sitting next to her, patting Maki’s head much like the way an older sister would comfort a crying sibling.
“I’m pregnant.” Maki suddenly said.
Mao was taken aback; she had never known that Maki was actually dating anybody despite the many rumors. She turned to Meisa, meaning to ask her when she realized that the look on Meisa meant that she knew who was at fault. Mao knew the father, even possibly be friends with him, in fact.
When Mao turned to look at Maki, she was staring at the ceiling.
----------
“Oh yeah… I just remembered that Kei-chan wanted me to ask you what happened to your phone…” Maki heard Mao say from the kitchen. “She said she tried calling earlier but your phone was off…”
Maki couldn’t help but feel completely overwhelmed at what her friends were doing for her. Other than Mao and Meisa, there were only two other people who knew about her pregnancy, Toda Erika, and Kei-chan, Kitagawa Keiko. She had already been friends with Erika ever since they shot Nobuta together and it was Erika who introduced them to Keiko, being from the same province as the older model.
It was actually Keiko who first noticed the changes in her the past month. She had not had the urge of eating despite her busy schedule and she always felt sleepy. There were also times when her stomach suddenly churns whenever she smells something like shrimp or any seafood. It was also Keiko who convinced (or blackmailed, since she said she’d tell Meisa about her condition and Maki knew that Meisa would not stop nagging her about it for the next decade or so if she finds out) her to go for a check-up.
The two girls had arrived shortly after Mao had Maki tell her what the doctor had told said. It was then that Erika asked the question Mao wanted to ask (which Meisa knew the answer to but absolutely didn’t want to hear).
“Do you know who the father is?” Erika asked cautiously, sitting next to Maki on the sofa with Mao on the her side, both Keiko and Meisa opted to stand in front of them.
“Of course she does!” Meisa replied, appalled.
“I didn’t mean anything by it!” Erika shot back, realizing what her question implied. “I just didn’t realize that she was seeing somebody when she wasn’t even telling!”
Before Meisa could even open her mouth, Maki spoke, her hands covering her face.
“I didn’t! I mean, it only happened one time! How am I supposed to know I’d be pregnant from that one time?!” she said, finally looking up from her hands. She was no longer crying, but her face was so red from her blush.
She wasn’t even that sure how it started, the car ride home being as awkward as it is, just that when it did start, she didn’t know how to stop, she didn’t want to stop. And the thing is, she couldn’t even blame alcohol for what happened since she barely consumed enough alcohol to get her affected, what with every guy there watching out for her alcohol intake.
The feelings Yamapi had generated from her that night were so intense, it scared her. But she’d never ask for it to be undone, not even when Meisa found the jacket he accidentally left in her bedroom the day after and looked at her, demanding for an explanation.
“With who exactly, Maki-chan?”Keiko asked slowly.
Maki’s blush turned a deeper shade of red when she looked at her. Nobody spoke (not even Meisa), every one of them waiting for Maki’s response.
It was with a screech that she shouted “Yamashita!” before she covered her face again.
Meisa crossed her arms and frowned, Erika and Mao caught each others eye all too aware of the circumstances involved when being with a Johnny, while Keiko tried her best not to smile, clearly remembering some things she’d learned about the aforementioned Johnny idol.
“Does he know?” Mao asked.
“Why the hell should he?!” Meisa quipped immediately causing Keiko to give her a silencing look. This odd group of friends had always regarded Keiko as the older sister. Some sort of an authority figure they could rely on to install calm and control whenever it would seem like they’re losing such.
“No…” came Maki’s muffled answer. “After… after it happened, we both said we should just forget about it… And right now, I don’t know if I want to tell him…”
“Why not?” Erika asked. “He is the father, after all. He should know…”
“Why?!” Meisa retorted. “What has that guy done except donate a few of his sperms?!”
“Well, since he part-started this problem, I figured he should help in solving it now, shouldn’t he?” Erika answered back.
Meisa snorted. “What exactly can that guy do to make this better?! He’s a Johnny!”
“What’s wrong with that?!”
“Forget what you learned since you dated and broke up with one, have you?” Meisa leered.
“Coming from the girl who’s dating one right now?” Erika snorted.
Meisa blushed furiously. “I AM NOT—!”
Keiko cleared her throat before Meisa could finish her sentence. The two immediately clamped their mouths shut, looking furiously away from each other.
“So, what are your plans?” Keiko asked.
A tensed silence reigned amongst the five friends. They’re all aware that everything in Maki’s near and distant future would rely on what her decision would be.
“I’m going through with this baby,” she said after a few moments, her voice determined.
