“Don’t tell me that the great Ninomiya Kazunari is here drinking now and looking so sad and lost because of the news I just heard,” those words startled Nino, making him almost jump out of his seat in that corner booth at a pub in downtown Tokyo.

No, not just those words but also, or even more so, the voice uttering those words. That female voice.

He wasn’t expecting to see her there. In fact, she wasn’t expecting to see anyone at all.

“Masami!” Nino exclaimed in shock, looking up from where his eyes had been concentrating on watching the ice melt to his whiskey to find her really standing there, Nagasawa Masami. And there was a small, rather coaxing, smile on her lips. Recovering from that initial shock, Nino found himself struggling to his feet as he said “Nagasawa-chan, what are you doing here? I mean, uhm, take a seat,” he ended up offering.

Masami chuckled, sliding to the seat opposite where Nino is now sitting in.

“This is my favorite pub, just in case you have forgotten,” she told him cheekily as she signaled one of the passing waitresses her order. “My personal place to sit and think. What are you doing here?”

“Oh, well…” Nino started, finding himself struggling to put together words to make anything coherent.

If truth be told, he didn’t really know what he was doing there, nor did he know why he headed there in the first place. All he knew was that he needed to be some place he could think and he found himself driving to that pub. It’s actually been quite a while since he’s been there. 3 years actually, 3 odd years coinciding with when his relationship with her ended.

“Awww, for the first time in years I saw you lost for words,” Masami said in a mix of cheerful and pitying tone. “You really must be affected over that news.”

It was that tone, and the smile on her lips, if anything that placed his signature smirk back on his lips when Nino asked, his eyebrow slightly raised too, “What news would that be?”

“Matsumoto-kun and Inoue Mao-chan’s wedding,” Masami shrugged, taking a sip of the drink the waitress had just lain before her. “It was all over the news actually. From what I’ve heard, the reactions from the fans are still quite mixed, though they are generally happy the two of them finally got together.”

Nino knew that of course, especially since it was during their concert at Tokyo Dome earlier that night where Jun made the first announcement guaranteeing that he would be there to see the fans’ reactions to the news. He, Aiba, Sho, and Ohno were also there, albeit backstage, when Jun and Mao held the press conference right after the concert to make their formal announcement to the press.

“And why would that affect me?” he asked as he tilted his head slightly to his right, his eyes taking in all of her. She remained to be as beautiful as the last time he remembered seeing her, her skin as alluring as the last time he touched her skin. As his eyes took in what he never had forgotten, his heart started pushing out the feelings he had pushed so far in for the past three years

“Well,” Masami shrugged her eyes pointedly looking at her glass as the slight coloring of her cheeks told Nino that she had noticed him looking and her and was feeling conscious of it. The idea made him unusually happy. “I, I imagine that you guys weren’t really expecting one of your own to marry this soon.”

Nino chuckled. “It’d be a bigger surprise if he didn’t actually, not with Jun-kun planning for this ever since he and Mao-chan met.”

“Well, I remember Jun-kun saying it once when we were shooting for Kakuride,” Masami said. “He said he was going to get married when he turned 30. Kudos to him for keeping true to that promise!”

“Yeah,” Nino smiled. “It’s just like him. Although to be honest, I was kinda hoping that Mao-chan would end up not signing the marriage license,” he admitted with a grin.

“Why?” Masami asked, her smile diminishing slightly. “Don’t tell me you still have feelings for her?”

“Well, I still find it a bit annoying that my group mate gets to have one of my crushes,” he admitted. “Although I’ve long since accepted this kind of future for those two, it’s just one of my childish fantasies.”

“Yeah,” Masami continued to smile as she took another sip, her smile a bit reminiscent this time. “I’ve always loved that about you.”

Hearing those three words; I, love, and you, coming from Masami’s lips, Nino found his own heartbeat starting to beat frantically, he beating he tried to downplay as he put out a cool façade when he asked “What is?”

“You being a bit childish,” Masami admitted, raising her eyes to meet his. “I’ve always found that cute.”

“I’m still childish,” Nino shrugged playfully although it felt like his heart was going to jump to his throat. “Shouldn’t that mean you still love me? Because I know I do.”

Nino saw how Masami’s breathe hitched at those words the same way he held his own as he waited for her response.

“You’re trying to be cute, Ninomiya,” she said after two heart beats.

Nino grinned. If Masami was still the Masami he knew, then that was just Masami being unsure of what to say. It wasn’t a rejection. Yet.

“I’m sure you haven’t forgotten, I don’t try to be cute, Masami-chan, I am already cute,” he said.

Masami shook her head lightly.

“A lot of things have changed Nino,” she said, reading through his words. “I’ve changed.”

“But some things remain to be the same,” Nino ended up pointing out. “Here you are, after 3 long years of almost no real interaction, suddenly trying to make me feel better because you thought that I felt bad because Jun-kun married my crush, or something along those lines. Some things didn’t change, like the way I feel about you.”

“We’ve already ended Nino,” Masami sighed.

“Yes,” Nino nodded. “We both decided to end it because it would be both better for our own careers.”

“What makes you think that has changed?” Masami ended up asking in exasperation.

Nino grinned. “Jun-kun is already married and Mao-chan is still alive and well, I think that would be a very big sign that it has changed.”
-----

For a while, Masami could only gape at Nino. She never thought she’d be having this kind of conversation with him the moment she mustered up the courage to walk up to him. He was right when he said that she went there to try and make him feel better. That was purely her intention, never thinking that it would steer into this.

“What if I told you there’s already someone else?” she ended up asking.

There was no someone else of course, she just had to blurt that out. She was scared, scared of how things were suddenly flowing towards that direction. Sure, she had never really forgotten the guy no matter how much and how hard she tried in the past but things were moving a bit too fast for her comfort, almost as fast as how things worked the first time around.

“There is no someone else,” Nino said confidently.

“What makes you so sure?” she replied.

“Because I’m me,” Nino shrugged rather arrogantly. “Childish remember? A lot about me still hasn’t changed.”

Masami could only sigh. If truth be told, her heart is already screaming to say ‘Yes!’ but she couldn’t make herself to say that. She was afraid, afraid that things would end up the same way it ended up the first time around. She was afraid she wouldn’t be able to handle another heartbreak like that.

“Please?” Nino suddenly said when her eyes met his and she could see the plea in his eyes. She lost.

“Okay,” she gave in. But before Nino could do or say anything, she immediately added “But I want us to take things slow, starting with me leaving this table and you allowing me to go?”

“You’re leaving?” Nino asked in surprise, the glee freezing in his face.

“Yeah,” Masami nodded as she stood up. Somehow, she felt as though she made the right decision this time. “You don’t look so sad and lost anymore,” she added with a smile.
-----

Nino could almost jump in joy the moment she said yes. Well, she actually said ‘okay’, but still it was some variation of the word ‘yes’. Masami is giving them a chance!

“Can I say something before you leave though?” he said, his smile turning into a secret grin.

“What is it?” Masami asked with a smile.

“You do know that I never really felt anything for Mao-chan, right? That it was just a childish crush?” he asked. “Because I remember you asking me earlier if I still have some feelings for her,” he added, showing her his grin this time.

Masami simply narrowed her eyes at him for a moment before she turned around without saying another word. Nino wasn’t worried though. Because for sure, before she turned around, he saw how Masami beamed.
