Summary: Their love had always been neither here nor there… This time, she just really wanted to know…
-----

Their relationship had always been what Mao terms as ‘neither here nor there’ over the years. Three years to be exact, three years that she’d been acting with and against that one certain idol.

Looking back, she can’t really recall how their ‘relationship’ started, just that it did. It may be that one of them realized his/her liking for the other which the other reciprocated soon after. And it may be that they just both realized that they’re no longer just looking at each other as colleagues and co-workers but someone much, much more.

Technically speaking, she wasn’t dating the guy. They both knew that such a situation is never a good idea, especially considering who he is and what agency he belongs in. Papers had had their speculations and their names had been the headliner of rumor mills but no one, outside their close circle of friends, knew anything of the real story.

But while they weren’t dating, they spend much of their time together, that is, even outside the set of the show that had catapulted them into being Japan’s favorite onscreen sweethearts, and, of course, outside the time he spends doing his duties and responsibilities to his group that had slowly and steadily gained fame and position. And for those times when they’re not able to be physically with each other, they’d send messages or make calls to each other.

In essence, they were already a couple. In actuality, what they had didn’t have a name.

And that is something Mao’s determined (albeit with shaking knees and loud thumping heart) to correct.

They were in his apartment already, having just finished a late dinner he had prepared for them, consisting of his signature pasta and her favorite ice cream. Mao had offered to help cleaning up, but him, being him, declined. Which is why she spent the last few minutes alone in his living room, watching a TV program she’s not really seeing because all her thoughts were on the wine bottle she’d brought along with her to help her in her plan for the night.

The wine has a higher alcohol content than the ones they’re used to drinking but it didn’t bother her that much. If truth be told, it was actually her intention. She’d known from previous experiences that alcohol does tend to loosen the tongue and that’s what she’s hoping would happen. She’s already prepared for the physical after effects of drinking a strong liquor. What she isn’t completely prepared for though, is what she’d here from him when she actually gets around to answering her question.

After all, she is just she and he is an idol.

A small part of her is saying that she should drop the issue already and just be content of what the two of them has but she knew she could never really live with just that. Sure she always feels reassured when they’re together but she always has this underlying fear that maybe she was just reading into things too much.

She needed to be sure.

And the moment Matsumoto Jun entered his living room, she had coaxed him into that drinking spree. Before she backs out herself.
-----

“Mao-chan, what’s going on?” Jun asked straight out about an hour and a half (or two) in their drinking spree.

Maybe because Jun really just had a higher alcohol tolerance, or Mao’s just really so nervous that she ended up going glass after glass of the wine even with Jun trying to slow her down because by that time, Mao found herself more drunk than she intended too, and way more drunk than Jun is now.

“What is what?” she asked cheekily, and slightly hysterically, as she looked up to meet the guy’s gaze. There was a look of concern in Jun’s eyes and for what could possibly be the millionth time, she felt herself drowning in them again.

Jun shook his head endearingly, placing his shot glass back on the table before he inched to her side.

Poking at her nose, he said with a slight chuckle “You may be a good drunk but I’m better… What’s going on? I know there’s something going on… Tell me…”

For some reason, or maybe just because of the alcohol, Mao felt a bit hurt seeing him chuckle like that. It gave her the feeling that she’s just some sort of source of amusement in his eyes.

“Why should I?” she asked defiantly as she reached out to pour a generous amount on her own shot glass. When she picked it up though, Jun’s hands reached out too and stopped her hand.

With her hand still in his, he made her face him again.

“You were never a good liar… Not to me anyway…” he told her when she finally looked him in the eyes again. “I know something is bugging you… What is it?”

Mao felt something blocking her throat the moment she heard that, and she almost, just almost, thought she would cry. But she bit that back as she cried “You!” before yanking her hand away from him to hold her head with as she laid it on the back of the sofa.

Perhaps he just really didn’t know what to say, or perhaps she caught him off guard, because it took Jun a couple of seconds before he exclaimed “Me?!”

“Yes you!” Mao cried, removing the hands that were covering her head to look directly into his again. This time though, there was something guarding in them. “You’re my problem!”

Jun just stared at her for a while before he ended up chuckling and shaking his head.

“Stop laughing at me!” Mao complained, hitting him continuously at the chest.

“Wait! Wait!” Jun exclaimed as he tried to stop himself from chuckling and her hands from hitting him. Mao was able to put in a couple more hits before his hands caught hers and held them locked in place. When he finally managed to do that, he had pulled her close to him until their bodies are almost touching.

“Why am I your problem?” he asked.

“Because you’re an idiot!” Mao cried, saying the first words that came to her mind. The moment she said that though, words just started flowing out. “Because I never really know what we are! Because I think I might already be in love with you but you’re just seeing me as your latest form of amusement!”

For a split second, there was a blank look in Jun’s face before it split into another smile again and asked “Wait? You love me?”

“You’re an idiot!” Mao repeated, the alcohol still taking effect since she didn’t feel herself blushing. She tried to snatch her hand away from his grip again though but this time she didn’t succeed.

“But you love me…” Jun grinned before suddenly going serious. “So the real reason you wanted to drink because you were afraid that I don’t return the feelings, huh?”

“Hmpf!”

This response made Jun smile again before yanking her to him, this time with their bodies actually toughing.

“Jun?!” Mao cried.

Jun ignore that indignant cry though as he simply smiled and searched her face. “You know, that’s really something you shouldn’t worry about…” he said as he let go of her hands for his own to completely wrap around her waist. “Because I’ve always loved you too…”

“Yeah right…” Mao scoffed although her heart started beating so fast again.

“It’s true…” Jun grinned. Possibly feeling her increased heartbeat too. “I just never said anything because I thought you were still unprepared to take the next step...”

“Oh, so you’re saying that you were waiting for me to confess before you do anything?” Mao challenged although there was a huge smile threatening to rise to her lips.

“Not really…” Jun chuckled. “I was prepared to wait ‘til your next birthday but this works…” he added before claiming her lips, partly to stop her from challenging him again and partly because he’d wanted to kiss her ardently the moment he heard her blurt out that confession.

On Mao’s part, he didn’t really have anything to say, or if she had, she forgot all about it as her hands draped itself over Jun’s shoulders and started playing with the hair at his nape.
-----

“So this makes us a couple now, huh?” Mao asked playfully hours and hours later when all is said and done and they’re in his bed already.

Jun looked thoughtful for a while before he shook his head and said “Pretty much…”

“Only pretty much?” Mao challenged and Jun smiled.

“Let’s just put it this way… Any guy who even thinks of holding you this way is in dire danger…” he said as he hugged her closer. “And you will never have to fear of me looking at another girl…”

And before Mao could say anything else, Jun captured her lips, sealing that declaration with a kiss.

Author's Notes: Inspired by Toma's 5LDK guesting (and therefore, all of TOKIO)

“I’m serious!” Yu heard Maki cry as she re-entered her boyfriend’s living room. “Look at it!”

“I’m looking!” came Shun’s reply. “But there isn’t really anything there to see…”

“What?! Are you sure those glasses have the right prescription?! Come on! It’s there!” came Maki’s reply as the two entered Yu’s field of vision.

Shun and Maki were seated on his sofa, next to each other with Maki’s hand going over Shun’s shoulder in her attempt to grab from him the remote he was holding in his other hand, out of her reach.

“If I hadn’t known better, I’d start getting jealous by now…” Yu joked as she set the tray of refreshments she had on her hands on the center table before settling on Shun’s other side.

After all, it isn’t the first time Maki went over to Shun’s place and got into a discussion with the apartment owner that they almost looked like they’re having a lover’s tiff. She did get a bit jealous the first time, but she already knew by now that the most between Shun and Maki would be a brother-sister kind of relationship.

Putting his arms immediately over Yu’s shoulders, Shun smiled “Well, I’m glad you know better…”

“And I’d feel much, much better if you two don’t start going all mushy and gooey while I’m here right now…” Maki inserted from next to them while making exaggerated gagging sounds.

Turning to her with his nose wrinkled, Shun said “I don’t know when the sweet, shy Horikittie suddenly turned into someone like this…”

“Pfft…” said Maki as she reached for one of the glasses Yu had just set on the table before turning to Yu and saying “You know, you better get his eye prescription changed… His prescription now isn’t working…”

With a chuckle, Yuu smiled and said “What’s the commotion about now?”

“Shun-kun doesn’t believe what I’m telling him!” Maki cried her complaint. “He isn’t even listening to me!”

“What about?” Yu asked curiously.

“Toma-kun…” Shun replied. “Toma-kun and his supposed feelings for his co-star…”

“Which co-star?” Yuu asked interestedly, ignoring Shun’s pointed looks and silent pleas of her not entertaining Maki’s ideas.

“Higa-chan!” Maki cried and as Shun face-palmed in his disappointment, Maki took the chance to grab the remote away from him, quickly rewinding the video onscreen before Shun could even react.

The video was actually a recording of one of Toma’s earlier show promotions for his ongoing drama, Majo Saiban, specifically the one where he and Manami guested on one of his sempai, TOKIO’s, shows, 5LDK, the same video that Maki had been showing him earlier. Maki had insisted that there was something ‘special’ with the way Toma interacted with Manami. And that it was the subtle kind of special, according to Maki, not one that’d be used from promotions, especially for a Johnny.

Maki had hit pause right on the part where Toma and Manami caught each other’s eye just as they entered the ‘house’ with everyone from TOKIO greeting Manami in (just before Toma’s sempai, Matsuoka, made his move to ‘shove’ Toma out).

“See! There’s something about that look!” Maki insisted, turning to him and Yu.

Shaking his head and stopping himself from rolling his eyes, Shun said “Maybe you were just a bit too affected with the jokes TOKIO-san had thrown Toma-kun and Higa-san in that clip…” knowing full well how the 5 member group proceeded on insinuating that there might be something more between Toma and his co-star.

“I don’t know…” Yu admitted next to him, making him turn to her in shock and Maki in all smiles. “I mean, there seemed to be something in that look they shared…”

“There is, right?!” Maki cried, obviously relieved to have found an ally in his girl friend. “I’m telling you, that was the look Nakatsu-kun was supposed to be giving Mizuki-chan! Or the look Domyouji-san and Makino-chan shared! And it wasn’t just the look they shared either… I’m telling you, there’s something in there!”

Groaning but fully aware that he now didn’t stand a chance with Yu being convinced of Maki’s arguments and that he’s 2:1 on the losing end (no matter how much he believes that there’s an alternative explanation out there), he turned to the younger actress and cried “Fine! Maybe somewhere in there Toma does like his co-star, and maybe, just maybe Higa-san likes him too… Why, in the name of my sanity and peace of mind, are you telling me?”

“Because if I told Toma-kun, he’d be twisting everything until it somehow ends up that it’s proof that I like his best friend…” Maki grunted.

Shun laughed, knowing who that ‘best friend’ is. After all, Toma had been joking Maki on Yamapi since the very first day the two met on set of HanaKimi, way earlier than even before Toma and Maki got close. If anything, Toma’s jokes helped to the two of them being close.

“You really have no interest in Yamashita-kun?” Yu asked curiously and a tad bit mischievously seeing as she’s been made aware of it too. “I mean the only other onscreen pair that generated a louder chatter than you two that year was Jun-kun and Mao-chan in Hanadan, and we all know they’re together now…”

“No!” Maki cried. “Nothing… Nada…”

“So you’re saying that you have absolutely no interest in a guy, a Johnny idol, almost everyone else is saying to be ideal boyfriend material, popular, and a huge hit with the ladies?” Shun asked incredulously.

Maki paused for a while.

“If the question is ‘Do I like Yamapi?’, then, the answer is no… But if you say it that way, that’s a different matter all together…” she said eventually and with a sly grin on her lips.

“Wait! What?!” Shun exclaimed in confusion, followed by his and Yu’s pestering of Maki for the meaning of what she just said.

Maki simply smiled.
-----

“What the hell?! Toma!” Shun cried the moment he pushed open the guy’s greenroom and found himself stepping in to total darkness, or almost total darkness except from the light being emitted by the light through the open doors of the comfort room.

If truth be told, Toma wasn’t aware that he was dropping by. Shun just found about an hour of free time in his schedule after his meeting with some producers ended earlier than expected for a project that does not involve him in front of the camera but behind the scenes crying ‘Cut!’. And since he was at the Ikuta Studios already and he knew Toma is shooting there for his latest drama, Majo Saiban, he decided to drop by.

He actually didn’t know where exactly is Toma’s greenroom, just the general location of all the greenrooms. Thankfully, he met his co-star, Higa Manami, along the hallway and she was the one who pointed out the direction to him (after a lot of blushing and bowing on her end since he is, of course, a sempai in the industry).

“Shun-kun?!” Toma cried in surprise just as Shun found the light switch and flipping it on. “What are you doing here?”
-----

“Why were your lights off anyway?” Shun asked Toma from where they were seated at the cafeteria after the latter dragged him there when he declared he hadn’t eaten yet.

Toma had to chew the food he had just put on his mouth before saying “I really don’t like bright lights…”

“You didn’t hate it that much when we were shooting HanaKimi… I don’t remember you turning off all the lights in your greenroom…” Shun said with a raised eyebrow before adding, with a mischievous smile, “Or does this have something to do with your co-star?”

Toma looked up at him in what seems to be an attempt to look innocently confused but Shun noticed how he blanched a bit, making Shun chuckle all the more.
And the smile on his lips could only widen when he caught sight of a female figure entering the cafeteria, especially when Toma caught sight of her too and (after quickly swallowing his food) signalled her to come over.

But Toma, by the time Manami joined their table, had turned into Nakatsu, fun, quirky, and the kind of guy any girl would love to have as a friend, a character Shun’s used to seeing with the guy. At least that’s what he’s showing Manami, but maybe because Shun is a guy, or maybe because Maki had already enlightened him of the possibility, but Shun noticed something different with Toma this time around.

And he also noticed the signs, the same warning signs that was somehow written all over Jun’s head before he got together with Mao. And after his success with those two’s love story, he somehow felt that it is his responsibility to do something again. And a thought entered his head.

“Let’s go to karaoke later…”
-----

Oguri Shun’s first prominent role was being the bullied, but it’s actually playing the bully that Shun has played to perfection. He’s so good at it that no matter how much Toma and Manami declined his invitation, the two still found themselves in a karaoke booth that night, along with a few other Johnnys, and Yu.

And while he felt glad that he was able to pull in some people despite it being an instantaneous invitation in the first place; Jun was able to come, sans Mao who had a shoot, and Ryo; it was actually the guy coming in with Ryo that made Shun really smile. Especially after noticing how Toma, as inconspicuous as he tries to be, reacted to the pleasantries that followed their entry.

“Manami-chan?” Yamapi exclaimed as he slid into the couch. “It’s been a while?” he chuckled, the supposed statement turning into a question because really, it hasn’t been that long since Code Blue ended.

“Yeah…” Manami chuckled demurely, with a hint of a blush high on her cheeks. “Uhm… It’s good to see you again Pi-kun…”

“Yeah… It is…” Yamapi smiled. “I actually have been thinking of calling you guys out for dinner or something…” he said, referring to their other cast mates at the drama they worked together in.

“That’d be nice…” Manami smiled.

It was at this point that Shun noticed the small frown Toma was trying to hide as he nodded at the guy who had just turned to him. And he couldn’t help but grin.
----

“How’re you getting home anyway?” Yu asked Manami as their little group started to prepare to leave for the night. Jun had already left earlier to pick up Mao and Ryo for a shoot with his Kanjani8 group, leaving Shun, Yu, Toma, Manami, and Yamapi in the group.

“I’m taking a cab…” Manami smiled.

“Why?” Shun asked. “Your manager’s not picking you up?”

“She’s at the other end of town…” Manami supplied. “I’d feel bad if she has to drive all the way to here just to pick me up…”

“You can ride with us…” Yu offered, looking at Shun for his approval, to which Shun nodded after a covert glance at Toma. “Sure, that’s not a problem…”

“Nah… I wouldn’t want to trouble you guys too…”

“I can drop you off…” Yamapi offered but before Manami could even accept or decline the offer, Toma declared “No. She’s riding with me…” with such a serious air that no one objected (although Shun and Yu, the latter having more success than the former, hid their grins).
-----

“So, this is your place huh?” Toma said as he followed Manami into her apartment, after the latter invited him in for coffee when they reached her place.

Technically speaking, he’s already seen her apartment, but only through photos, particularly the ones she bought in 5LDK to show. And he was right when he said back then that it looked nice. It really is. It had a really homey and comfortable feel to it.

“Yeah…” Manami chuckled as she deposited her bag on the side table. “Pretty small huh?”

“Nah… It’s nice…” Toma said, a response that made Manami beam at him.

For a while they just looked at each other’s eye before Manami cleared her throat and said “Uhm… Yeah… Make yourself comfortable… I’ll just go make us some coffee…”
-----

When Manami did enter her kitchen, Toma took the chance to reflect on what happened that day, that night in particular, and what led him to being in an apartment 5 of her sempais had joked he’s been in before.

He didn’t really know how it happened, or why, but he just found himself feeling ever so slightly annoyed with Yamapi the moment the guy entered the booth, particularly when he saw how he smiled at Manami and how Manami blushed at the attention. And despite the fact that the guy is his best friend, he suddenly wished that Yamapi hadn’t decided to accept Shun’s invitation (even if the idea might have come from him originally).

And some part of him knew why he suddenly felt that way towards the guy he can never really feel angry with, why he somehow knew what or where Shun seems to be heading to when he suddenly invited them out for karaoke when he was never the karaoke type of guy in the first place. But Toma was a reasonable man, always had, and always will be, and reason tells him that he shouldn’t be doing or attempting to do things that would potentially endanger not only him but Manami, too.

And in his attempt to clear his head off the effects of the past previous hours, since he still thinks and believes that he shouldn’t make any move, he noticed the shelf, which, in Manami’s photos for 5LDK, only had three photos but now had quite a few more.

“What’s the theme for you shelf?” he asked aloud, enough for Manami to hear as he headed there.

“Oh… Just me and the people important and special to me…” he heard her reply from the kitchen. Toma simply nodded as his eyes started going over the photos.

Manami’s picture was there, of course, innocent and charming as always, along with some photos of her family and her pets. The others, it seems are photos of her friends. He was really just looking through them when a couple of picture frames caught his attention, somewhere almost at the middle of the shelf. One had a group picture of the main casts of Majo Saiban while the other was a picture of her with all 5 members of TOKIO.

A bit confused and slightly amused, Toma looked up just in time to see Manami re-entering the living room with two cups of coffee in her hands.

“What are these doing here?” he ended up asking, a smile on his lips.

“Oh! “ Manami exclaimed, Toma noting a hint of a blush on her cheeks. “I normally have cast pictures around…”

“Oh…” Toma nodded, his eyes immediately (but covertly) scanning the rest of the photo frames there for some other familiar faces. “Yamapi’s face is in here somewhere then?”

“Somewhere, maybe…” Manami answered with a shrug, making Toma almost burst into another huge smile, feeling comforted with that response and the fact that he can’t see any hint of Yamapi’s face anywhere.

“What about this?” he ended up asking, picking up the frame with her and the six TOKIO men.

Manami smiled fondly as she too looked at the picture. “I had fun during that guesting… TOKIO-san were really nice and funny…” she said. “Besides, you were the one who took that picture…”

The first part of that statement he had already expected, knowing that those are just part of his sempai’s charms. But the latter part startled him a bit.

He really was the one who took that photo right after they wrapped up for that shoot. Taichi and Matsuoka specifically asked for him to take the photo the moment they caught sight of him still at the set even when his part was already technically over (he just couldn’t help but stay behind and watch (and silently hope and beg that his sempais behave).

Looking up to Manami’s face, he saw that she wasn’t looking his way. She was looking at her cup to be exact, with a little too much concentration the way he sees it. And some part of him thinks he knows why. He can never be sure though. And he knew there’s only one way to find out.

But he’s still adamant about his decision of not going to that direction though which is why he simply chuckled and headed back to the sofa where he and Manami took their seats, with a safe distance between them, as they both consumed their coffee and talked about things that Toma considers to be safe for them.

But maybe because he really was curious, or maybe because he’d been given a sneak peak inside what he considers as his ‘Pandora’s’ box but his mind kept turning back to that photograph by the shelf and what Manami might or might not have meant by it.

“So, yeah… I guess I better go…” he said suddenly when he felt the question he really wanted to ask at the tip of his tongue.

“Oh… Okay…” Manami smiled brightly, most probably in an attempt to hide the bit of disappointment quite visible in her eyes, as they both rose to their feet to head to the door.

They were both silent as they reached it and as Toma whirled around to face her before he really goes, he realized that its his last chance to do, or ask, something about that picture before it’d be too late.

“Why exactly?” he asked before he could stop himself.

“Why what?” Manami asked in confusion.

“That picture…” Toma said as he nodded towards the shelf, knowing in the back of his mind that he’s doing something rash and something he hadn’t thought about clearly. “Because TOKIO-san were nice or because I took it?”

“Oh…” Manami said as she too turned around to look at the picture in question. “A bit more of the latter than the former…” she admitted and Toma almost choked on his own saliva.

Nitpicking through the words, it should be said that, technically speaking, it was just a simple statement that could not be counted as a huge admission of any sort. But while Toma’s head tried to be reasonable, it can not deny or ignore the sudden erratic beating of his own heart, or the rush of blood that seemed to have gone to Manami’s face after that statement.

“Oh…” was the only noise that managed to escape his lips. And then Manami turned around to face him again and his mouth moved of its own accord (or more likely moved due to his heart’s accord). “Maybe we could go out some time…”

With her eyebrow slightly raised, Manami asked “Why?”

“Because I’ve been doing what my head’s been telling me all this time, I figure, maybe it’s about time I let my heart take the lead…” Toma answered without missing a beat.

“Oh!” Manami exclaimed. “I’d like that…”

Toma grinned as a small smile started playing on Manami’s lips.

When he didn’t, or couldn’t, say anything else after that though, Manami ended up chuckling.

“So…” she started. “Good night, Ikuta-kun…”

“Oh… Yeah…” Toma exclaimed, suddenly remembering why he’s already at her doorway already. “Uhm…. Call me Toma…”

“Okay… Toma-kun…” Manami said and Toma’s heart flipped at how he loved the sound of his name coming from her lips.

“Yeah… Good night then…” Toma managed to say.

After a split second of hesitation, they both made a move that somehow ended to Manami giving him a quick kiss on the cheeks.
-----

Toma still felt as though he’s on high as he drove out of Manami’s apartment complex, heading towards his apartment. And that wasn’t just because of the kiss too.

There was something promising about what he and Manami had, sort of, agreed to, much more meaningful than the “See you on set…” they both managed to say before he left her door.

But still, he couldn’t help but groan after a few more seconds.

And the groan wasn’t even because of the fact that his reasoning had slowly returned to tell him that he’s facing a whole lot of potential trouble with what he had just made the first step into (something he thinks that could, and would, be worth it).

It was because he just realized what he said back in Manami’s doorway and the fact that it would be the cheesiest line he’d ever said, even on-screen. And while he knew he can’t go back in time to erase that line, or say a line that’s leaps and bounds cooler than “it’s about time I let my heart take the lead…”, there was one thing he really hopes for.

That no one, not even any of his closest friends, find out how cheesy he’s been.
-----

“So, you think it worked?” Shun asked as he pulled his car to a stop in front of his apartment.

“It could…” Yu shrugged. “But virtually, it’s Toma-kun’s call if your plan would work or not… Higa-chan looks like she’s just waiting for him to make a move or not…”

“Yeah… Toma’s too much of a Mr. Nice Guy… The Mr.-I-Have-To-Follow-The-Rules…” he complained as he got out of the car and opened the door for her. “But I think that part can be easily arranged…” he added with a slight, mischievous grin.

Yu chuckled, shaking her head as she got out of the car. “Why? Don’t tell me you have more plans of putting the poor guy’s feet on the fire…”

“If he still hadn’t confessed…” Shun replied a matter-of-factly. “I mean, I’ve already started, right? Why stop now?” he added.

“Even when you’re already meddling?” Yu challenged.

“I’m helping…” Shun corrected as they made their way towards his door. “But I do hope Toma’s made his move by now…”

“Why? Don’t tell me you’re thinking of matchmaking your other friends…” Yu said.

But while Yu asked that jokingly, she was amused by Shun’s expression and response.

He’s smiling widely and thoughtfully as he said “Well, I already have someone in mind…”
