Chapter 8

“So, which of the two do you want?” Yamapi was asking her.

The two of them are at the grocery after she gave quite an offhanded remark that she needed to do some groceries and Yamapi decided to join her. He was holding a can of tomato sauce in each hand.

“Either…” she sighed. “I really can’t say if it’s different…”

“Of course you can…” he chuckled. “This one’s the original, and the other one’s Italian style… Though I think you’d be better off sticking with the original…” he added, returning the Italian one on the shelf and putting the other can into their cart.

“Yeah… Sure…” she replied although she wanted to say she could pull it off with the Italian one anyway. When Yamapi turned his back to look at the other food items, she grabbed the Italian style can and placed it on the cart.

“Is there something I should know?” Yamapi asked a little while later as they made their way through the shelves with her picking up food items listlessly and without saying anything much.

“Huh? What do you mean?”

“I noticed you’ve been a bit off a lot lately…” he replied. “You were never this down in the past… Is there something wrong?”

She bit the inner side of her lower lip as she stood rooted to the spot, her back turned to him. He was right when he said that she’s been out of it for most of the time that they were together but she can’t really tell him what’s wrong with her because she doesn’t know herself. She’s not always that down though. She’d be laughing and be energetic when she’s at the café, or when she reaches their apartment and sees Ryosuke, Mirai, or Rubi with Yuya there; they seemed to have decided to hang out at there regularly.

“Hey…” he started, moving around the cart so that he’s standing in front of her. “You can tell me if something is bothering you, you know…”

She looked up and saw him looking at her understandingly.

“I… I t-think…” she started, a part of her mind shouting to her the words, but she couldn’t really say them aloud. She looked down.

“Mao-chan…” Yamapi whispered, holding her by the chin to make her look up at him. “You think this is a mistake?”

She gasped involuntarily, hearing him say the words her mind was shouting at her.

“H-How?”

Yamapi chuckled humorlessly. “I think I’ve always known… Or felt at least… There was something different about you when I came back… For one thing, your eyes kept darting towards the entrance of the café as if you’re waiting for someone to come in even if I was already inside…”

She looked at him for a while. He didn’t look angry. He looked sad and resigned, but he didn’t look angry.

“I’m sorry…” she whispered.

“Don’t be…” he sighed. “It was my fault for being stupid enough to lose you in the first place… And I understand… I want you to be happy… Even if it’s now clear that it wouldn’t be with me…”

It was as if there was something heavy that was lifted from her chest and back when she heard him say that. She couldn’t help but smile tearfully as she hugged him, maybe for the last time, whispering in his ear the words “Thank you…”

She felt him hug her back tightly, and for a moment, it was as if he didn’t want to let go. But then he did, and there was an understanding smile on his lips as he took hold of the cart again and started maneuvering it, the atmosphere a lot more cheerful from before.

“I’m just curious…” he said after a while. “Is it him?”

“Him who?” she asked.

“The guy who could make you happy…” he explained. “Was he the guy I saw with you that night I went to your apartment?”

“Jun-kun?” she chuckled. “No, he’s just a friend…”

“Oh… Okay…” Yamapi shrugged.
-----

She was already at the apartment, clearing up the things they bought from the grocery. Yamapi had been nice enough to drop her off her place despite the fact that they’ve officially decided to be just friends. It turns out that no one else was there.

But there was something Yamapi said that was disturbing her as she placed the items in their respective cupboards. Something about Jun and being the guy who could make her happy. Yamapi hadn’t talked about it after she gave him that short reply but it lingered in her mind.

‘He is just a friend, right?’ she asked herself.

She was still deep into those thoughts when she felt her phone suddenly vibrating in her pocket. Fishing it out, she saw that it was Yuya.

“What’s up?” she asked immediately after she accepted the call. Yuya never calls her unless it’s something really important. Usually, his brother would just send him messages.

“I’m stuck in Chiba…” he said immediately. “Come pick me up!”

“First question, why are you there?” she asked. “Second question, what happened?”

“Ask me later!” he replied hurriedly and after giving her the address of a certain seaside view point, he ended the call.

Mao stared incredulously at the phone when he dropped the call before she could even reply. And then she shook her head endearingly and sighed. Grabbing her keys at the table, she made her way out the door.
-----

“You do know that you’re pushing Mao-chan to Mirai-chan’s brother, don’t you?” Rubi started conversationally.

She, Yuya, Ryosuke and Mirai were at the café after Yuya found out from Nagano that his sister wasn’t there.

“Yeah…” Yuya nodded, looking at her innocently.

“I think it’d be great if they end up together…” Mirai exclaimed. “Didn’t they look good together?” she asked Ryosuke.

“Yeah…” he nodded as he stuffed himself with the strawberry cheese cake Nagano had placed in front of them. “Yeah, they do…”

Yuya snorted. “You just want Jun-kun to be distracted with her so that he wouldn’t be breathing down your neck the entire time…” he chuckled.

“Well… Yeah…” Ryosuke replied. “I have priorities too you know…” he added indignantly turning to smile at Mirai, making the others laugh.
-----TBC-----

just thought i'd make it clear since i think it wasn't really pointed out in the story, there's some sort of relevance in the choice between the two pasta flavors... the original signifies Yamapi and the Italian one is Jun's... just a small bit about choices and the opportunity to go back and change your mind before it's too late...

anyway, to those who tried to cheer me up with regards to yesterday's post, really thanks... i was just in one of my moodier days... but i considerably feel better now, watching tons of Christmas songs might have helped a lot...

this one was one of the songs i repeated so many times yesterday... and i think i'm in love with it, although last night was the first time i've heard of it... it's upbeat, it's fun, it's quirky, it's weird... but i like it...

:D

anyway, that was chapter 8...
the finale would be posted tomorrow around this time...
on other fic related news, i've done my piece for Aiba's birthday (i'm still deciding if i should make another one...)
that is all...
