Chapter 7

Nagano Hiroshi rarely gives orders. If ever, he makes requests and asks for favors for things to go his way, but he rarely gives orders. But when he does give an order, it means he is really is serious. And when he is in that state, he can not be disobeyed.

This is why Mao found herself walking towards their apartment after barely a couple of hours since the two of them had that talk. Yuya had borrowed the car earlier that morning since he’s bringing to school his extremely large project and she obliged. She preferred walking to work at the moment anyway. This is why when she saw her car back in the driveway, she couldn’t help but smile and heave a relieved sigh. One reason why she didn’t want to go home yet was that because she didn’t want to stay there on her own. It seems that she doesn’t have to now.

But Yuya, it turns out, had company, judging by the number of voices that floated towards her when she opened the door. But those were familiar voices, and she couldn’t help but smile more.

“Hi guys!” she greeted, seeing Yuya in the living room, along with Ryosuke, Mirai, and Ryosuke’s older cousin, Rubi.

“Nee-san!” Yuya exclaimed, walking towards her immediately. “What’s wrong? I didn’t think you’d be coming home this early ever…”

“Hiroshi-kun made me…” she told him and she knew he understood what it meant. Somehow, it seems to her that Yuya had been having his own observations about her the past few weeks; it’s just that her brother never tells her about it. She let it go for the moment though as she turned to the other three and smiled “So what do we have here?”

Scattered in front of the three on the center table were books and notebooks along with pens and papers where they were seem to be working.

“We’re studying…” Ryosuke reported.

“That’s what they told Jun-kun anyway…” Yuya cleared for her. “And since he doesn’t want these two to work alone together, he asked if I could watch over them instead…”

“Why? Where’s your brother?” she asked Mirai, trying to sound nonchalant although she felt a big interest in hearing news about the guy. The last she was able to hear from Jun was a couple of days ago, and it wasn’t even a long phone call. She hadn’t had a chance to see him even after that afternoon Yamapi came back.

“He has a new project…” Mirai replied. “He finally accepted the proposal for the Japanese castle photography…”

“Finally?”

“Yeah…” Mirai nodded. “They’ve been asking him ages but he said there’s really no need since the castles were already photographed… I think they either hope to infuse his name or they wanted to present the angles in his style… Maybe both…”

Mao nodded. Ever since Jun said that he’s a photographer, she’d been bugging him to show her some of his works when she couldn’t find any for herself. It turns out that she would never be able to find his works under his name since he uses a pseudonym. His works are beautiful; there’s a majestic touch in the way he captures things that’s very alluring.

“And that’s why they’re here now…” Yuya chuckled. “Because I’m the official chaperone…”

“I tagged along since someone has to make sure that these guys actually study…” Rubi said with a laugh. “Since Yuya-kun doing that is highly doubtful…”

“Oi!”

Mao laughed. “She’s right…” she told her brother. “Anyway, you guys enjoy yourself… I’d go change for a bit and then I’ll see if I can rustle up some snacks for us…”

“I’ll help you…” Rubi volunteered. She smiled.
-----

“I’m just curious…” she started, turning to Mirai.

The kids were having a brief break from their studying to munch on the snacks she and Rubi had prepared. And she’d been watching them as they did so. She couldn’t help but notice how Rubi, who was seated next to her, and Yuya, seating opposite her, seemed to love to disagree with one another even though they didn’t really seem to oppose what the other was saying. It was as if they were opposing each other just for the sake of opposing each other. But it wasn’t as if it was the first time that happened, it always occurred whenever those two gets together, she just never noticed it that way. Maybe Jun really was a good teacher.

But for the other pair, she didn’t really need Jun’s “lessons”. It was quite obvious, how Ryosuke would attend to Mirai no matter how much Mirai would insist that she can handle it. It’s cute seeing someone she’s known for a long while to be a bit like a playboy become something like that. It was endearing. Yuya and Rubi thought it was funny.

But it reminded her of a question that came to her mind the last time she saw Jun, a question she had before she was caught in the whirlwind of Yamapi coming back.

“Curious about what?” Mirai asked.

“Has Jun-kun ever really fallen in love?” she asked.

“My brother?” Shida chuckled. “If you mean all his previous girlfriends, no, I don’t think he’s ever been in love with anyone of them…”

“Oh…” she sighed. She somehow felt glad to hear that but she still is confused. She had this feeling that there was something more to Jun when he told her about loving someone with all the heart and then how hard it is to move on.

“But I think mom believed that he’s fallen in love before… You know, before she and dad died…” Mirai continued, suddenly looking thoughtful. “I don’t know if she was just teasing him though… But I used to hear her telling Nii-san when he’s being grumpy all of a sudden that he doesn’t need to worry about whoever that girl is every time because he will get a chance to see her again…”

“When was that?” she asked curiously, knowing that Jun and Mirai’s parents died when he was about to turn 17 and Mirai was just 9.

“I think I was seven…” Mirai replied. “Yeah, because I started grade school already then…”

Mao nodded as she counted in her head. If Mirai was seven, that would make Jun 15 and she’d be 13 years old. She gasped. That was around the time they transferred houses.

And while the four continued eating, she sat there racking her brain, trying to recall if Jun had ever said anything about liking a girl around that time or even if she ever noticed him liking a girl then. She couldn’t remember anything though, partly because it’s been a very long time and partly because she didn’t really notice a lot before.

But she had this weird determination to find out.
