Chapter 3

“I thought you were going to teach me?” Mao asked when Jun led her to the window side seats of the café when the guy came in that afternoon.

“I am…” Jun smiled, sitting across her.

“Oh really…” Mao smiled, nodding her thanks at the waiter who had just delivered their drinks. “Then why are we here?”

“Little Mao-chan…” Jun chuckled, shaking his head a bit as he reached for his cup. “This isn’t school… You don’t need to be in a particular room to learn about these kinds of stuff…”

“What kinds of stuff, exactly?” she asked. “Since you have made it clear that you’re not going to teach me everything…”

“Of course I can’t… It’d be like fully betraying my fellow men…” he shrugged.

“And teaching me whatever it is that you’re planning to teach me isn’t betrayal to your fellow men?” Mao pointed out with a chuckle.

“At least not entirely…” he smirked. “Anyway, I’m just going to teach you how to keep him interested…”

“Oh really…”

When they were kids, and especially since Jun is a few years older than her, he’d always be teaching her lots of stuff. And he always used to say that they should start at the beginning.

With a chuckle, she pointed that out. “I’m surprised you’re not going to teach me how to do it from the start… You know, picking the guy…”

“You don’t need my help on that…” Jun replied nonchalantly. He didn’t seem to notice that he made her blush with that off-handed praise though as he continued “Anyway, the key to keeping every man’s interest is with the use of your eyes…”

“What? Like this?” she asked as she fluttered her eyes playfully at him.

Jun laughed, extending his hand to tap her lightly at the forehead. “Wrong use…” he said. “Observe… Use your eyes…”

“I am…” Mao smiled, giving off a small shrug as she let her eyes wander to the people walking past them. Just then, a couple holding hands passed by and she blinked furiously to stop the tears that suddenly threatened to flow. That’s what she and Yamapi used to be when they just started.

“So, let’s start…” Jun said, clearing his throat. When she turned to look at him, his was already surveying the room, giving her time to get back on happy face.

“Okay… For starters…” Jun started. “Tell me about those two…”

Following his eyes, she saw that he’s eyeing one of the table’s near the kitchen’s door where two teen-agers were seated, obviously working on some school work as there are notebooks and books on the table along with their orders. She smiled.

“That’s Chinen Yuri and Kawashima Umika…” she started. “High school students, 2nd year I think… They often stop by here to work on their assignments and projects after school… They’re best friends… Both smart kids, although she sometimes says that he’s just a smart-ass, which he might actually be… He prefers coffee while she likes chocolates… They both like sweets… He likes being spoilt… She sometimes acts more mature than her age… Hiroshi-kun’s a bit fond of them, actually…”

“And?”

“And what?” she asked, turning around to look at him only to see him watching her closely. “What else should be there?”

“The fact that they’re secretly in love with each other?” Jun supplied.

“What? How’d you come up with that?” she exclaimed. He chuckled, signaling her to look at the two again. She turned around but still couldn’t see what he meant.

“Notice how he steals glances at her whenever she had her head on her notebook? Notice his small smiles? See how she would sigh whenever he looks like he’s asking her a question but would still move over to teach him anyway with a smile on her face? See how nonchalant she tries to act when she wipes the crumbs off his face but with she’s suppressing her giggles anyway?” Jun said.

Mao’s jaw dropped. She didn’t even notice any of those things Jun mentioned until he mentioned it, and she had to admit that what the guy said was actually quite noticeable, only if it is pointed out.

“How’d you do that?” she asked, turning to look at him in awe. She’s pretty sure that Chinen and Kawashima weren’t there when he first came at the café the afternoon before.

“Easy…” he smiled, tapping the bridge of her nose right between her eyes. “Observe…”

“But I’ve been watching those two since they first started coming here over a year ago!” she exclaimed. She had been extremely fascinated by the friendship between the sexes that the two kids portrayed.

“That’s the perfect example of looking but not actually seeing… There’s a difference…” he said and she could only gape at him. She couldn’t disagree, especially now that he’d already proven himself.

“Every little action has a meaning…” he continued after taking a long drink from his cup. “A look, a touch, even a sigh… They all have a different meaning in different circumstances…”

“So that’s what you’re going to teach me huh?” she asked with a smile after a few seconds. “The meaning behind man’s every small action?”

“Some of it… But we’re skipping the lecture part and going straight to practicals…” he smiled. “Because stuff like these can’t actually be learnt unless you actually see it in action…” he added with a wink.

Mao couldn’t help but sigh contentedly as she climbed beneath her sheets to settle down for the night. Jun’s “practicals” took up the remaining of the afternoon and part of the night. But it wasn’t really tiring, it was entertaining in fact. He’d pointed out to her lots of various things at the café patrons and the passers by that she barely even noticed despite the fact that she’s always there.

By the end of their “lesson”, she found out that she wasn’t really as observant as she originally thought she was among other things. It turns out that other than Chinen and Kawashima, there are other love birds in the café, the always battling cashier and waiter in particular.

It wasn’t all about hidden lovers too. He pointed at the straight-laced businessman who always drops by the café every morning and night for a drink and usually sits on the table behind them, Sakurai-san, is not actually as he serious as he seems. He liked doodling on the edges of the newspapers he reads, although the drawings resemble that made by a 3-year old kid. He even noticed how the slightly eccentric artist, Ohno, who drops by every once in a while, always looks at his bread closely as if analyzing it before breaking off a piece.

She did not, however, notice that the last time she thought of her ex-boyfriend was that time she looked out the window and saw a couple holding hands. What she did notice was that she’s feeling very happy since meeting her old childhood friend again.
