Natsuniji had just aired it's final episode... it only means one thing...

i should restrain myself now more than ever from dl-ing all the episodes and watching them all in one go (especially since i've cleared enough disk space to do just that)... i admit, i am that kind of viewer/reader who prefers to know how things would end before devoting time to it... if i don't like how it ends, i would put off reading/watching it until i have absolutely nothing else to interest me... then, i might give it a chance...

but as of now, i firmly stand on my decision... i have to... even if i really want to watch the whole drama now... because exam week is coming and i need to focus... yes! that's it! focus!

but it doesn't help that i like how they went with the story... at first, i thought it would be a hot romance drama with sprinkles of comedy here and there... but somehow, i'm glad the story went that way, because in a way, it showed a more mature Matsumoto Jun... i think i actually understand why most of the viewers there who are their fans steered away from the drama because it portrayed a more mature version of the boys, of one of them (the youngest even) having a family of his own (even if Umi isn't technically his), which i think is one of every fan's greatest fears...

i know the others had portrayed father roles in the past too, i mean, Nino even had twins in that SP drama he had with Inoue Mao, but that story (i think) didn't focus on the family part but on his (Nino's) fight to continue (i haven't watched the drama too--it's on my to watch list--but i read that Mao's character, the wife, died)... Natsuniji was another matter, it focused on Matsujun's character pursuing the woman he loved and in the end, having a family of his own... i think their fans were apprehensive to see one of them acting out something they've all been afraid to happen... and it didn't help that it was the youngest who had that role since it makes you think about how it would be for the other older four... i mean, despite the fact that Matsujun is often considered one of the more mature of the group, it doesn't deny the fact that in Ohno's age he should already have kids...

baaah! i'm rambling! maybe this is my own way of saying that i'm looking forward to seeing/hearing the boys announce that they're getting married (Ohno's 30 already!)... the life while on the spotlight is good, and yes, they could still live there after they turn 40 or so (Higashiyama and Matchy did!) but when the spotlight is gone, and the fans turn to their own families and smile, i want the boys to have someone special to turn too....

because while your friends will always be there for you, nothing beats waking up in the middle of the night and smiling because you look to your side and you see that there's that special someone who'd be waking up with you for the rest of your life...

on another note, it seemed like whenever i enter my TOA review class, i always get to pick up a phrase or a term that i'd get to use on a fic i'm working on... this time, it gave me the idea of how the story would go for me to use a Shakespearean line i've read recently... this was what i came up with...

“I realized something…” Aiba declared as the five of them prepared to leave for the night.

Four pair of eyes looked up, two pairs in alarm, one in curiosity, and one in quite a blank daze; the rest of Arashi had always been a bit concerned whenever their miracle boy suddenly announces statements like that, especially when he’s looking as serious and as thoughtful as he is now.

“What is it Aiba-chan?” Ohno asked when Aiba didn’t say a word after a few seconds.

“Of all our songs, the only ones with the word ‘love’ in it are always connected to Jun-kun…” Aiba said.

“You only just noticed that?!” Nino smirked despite the fact that he and Matsujun had both exhaled in relief; the two youngest members were both afraid of what might have popped up in Aiba’s head again.

“I’m serious!” Aiba exclaimed, bouncing back to his lively self. “Love So Sweet, One Love, and now Love Rainbow! Those are all tied up with Jun-kun’s works!”

“Oh, I didn’t notice that before, Aiba-chan!” Ohno said. “You’re right, it is!”

Matsujun and Nino caught each other’s eye and tried hard not to laugh. Ohno might only be being nice to Aiba like usual but it also is highly possible that he only just noticed that.

“That can’t be helped…” Sho said. “Jun-kun’s the only one amongst us who’s given romantic roles…”

“No I’m not…” Matsujun countered. “Your drama with Maki-chan had a romantic touch to it too…” he told Sho.

“Nah… That’s just a side story…” said Nino. “Actually, you can even say it’s just an after thought… All of ours are… Yours are always the focus… But, it can’t be helped… After all, you’re Arashi’s lover boy!”

Matsujun turned to face their gamer when he saw that he was wearing a wide grin.

“That sounds gross, especially coming from you…” he told him before grabbing his bag and walking to the door, announcing to the group “I’ll wait for you at the van, I need to make a call…”

He was hoping to be out of the door before anyone can say anything else, especially since he’s not particularly excited of the fact that the topic is concentrated on him. He almost had his wish too, until…

“Mao-chan, huh?” Ohno asked before he was fully out of the door.

In disbelief, he turned to their leader and saw that by all intents and purposes, he was asking it innocently. It wasn’t necessarily a good thing, though, especially when he saw that Nino was snickering and Aiba looked thoughtful again; Sho was simply looking at their eldest in disbelief just like him. Deciding that it was a good time as any to pretend that Ohno had not said a word at all, Matsujun proceeded on his way out because despite the fact that Ohno was spot on with what he said, he did not need to tell them that.

“You know,” Nino said, moving to put an arm over their leader’s shoulder after seeing Matsujun retreat. “Aiba-chan might be our Comedy leader now but you are my personal source of amusement!”

“Huh?” asked Ohno in confusion which only made Nino laugh, his laughter stooped though with Aiba’s next words…

“I’m curious about that…”

“What are you curious about?” asked Sho in apprehension.

Aiba realizing something is already enough to cause the rest of Arashi alarm, him being curious is a whole new level. They all know that once Aiba’s curiosity is piqued, they’ve all got a problem because nothing would stop Aiba until his curiosity is fully satisfied.

Sho and Nino were expecting for the worst as they waited for Aiba to speak, Ohno simply looked mildly interested. But when Aiba spoke up, Nino grinned, Sho looked thoughtful, and Ohno became really interested. Aiba’s words were…

“When did Jun-kun and Mao-chan’s relationship start?”
-----

“It has got to be during the first series!” Sho exclaimed.

The five of them were out eating at their favorite Yakiniku place two days after that conversation.

“I’ve been thinking about it…” Sho continued. “It perfectly fit the timeline of his changes…”

“But he only told us about it sometime during Returns’ first few episodes…” Aiba said. “He wouldn’t keep a secret from us that long, would he?”

“Well, he did say they’ve been going out for a while before he told us…” Nino supplied. “I think Sho-kun’s right!”

Matsujun, who had been listening in on the conversation but was unable to follow, frowned at the familiar situations and terms his group mates are mentioning.

“What the heck are you guys talking about?!”

“Oh!” Nino exclaimed, as if surprised to see him there. “We’re just having a discussion about the start of the timeline of your relationship with Mao-chan.”

“And why is 3/5ths of Arashi suddenly interested in that?” Matsujun asked, his eyebrow already raised at Aiba who was seated opposite him. The older idol blanched at the attention but continued smiling almost innocently.

“Oh, Aiba-chan wanted to know when you and Mao-chan got together…” Ohno answered next to him. “We’re all just trying to figure it out…”

“You too Riida?!” exclaimed Matsujun in disbelief.

“You have to admit, Jun-kun…” Sho said. “It’s makes for an interesting study material, ‘Where do relationship’s start?’”

“Sho-kun, don’t you, for one moment, start pretending that this is educational,” Matsujun snorted. He knew that none of the four would let him have a peaceful day until they find out if he let’s them start now “I’m asking you guys, please, let this go…”

If Nino’s smirk was not enough answer, Aiba’s ignoring words made it perfectly clear.

“First season then… When exactly could it be?”

“I’m doomed…” Matsujun groaned while Ohno patted his back as if saying “Just ride along, Jun-kun.”

“If it’s the first season, it has got to be during the shooting of the punch scene!” Aiba continued. “Jun-kun’s never been punched by a girl before so I’m sure that would be where it all started!”

“You’re talking about the drama Aiba-chan! It’s different…” Nino lectured. “That can’t be it…”

“No, I think Aiba-chan has a point…” Sho said. “I think there’s a possibility that Mao-chan was apprehensive before that scene was shot. I mean, it’s not really a usual thing, hitting an idol, even if it’s in the script… She must have approached you back then…” he asked, turning to face Matsujun.

Matsujun, who had by then already sighed his acceptance that he’d have to live with his friends discussing this topic at least for the night, looked up.

Mao had in fact approached him before they take the actual shoot for that scene; he remembers that, particularly because Shun was laughing his heart out a few feet away from them. Mao didn’t say it but she was obviously trying to lighten up their situation by doing small talk.

“So what?” Matsujun answered Sho.

“So that must have been when the two of you started… you know…”

Matsujun chuckled, shaking his head. Since he’s doomed anyway, why not have some fun with it.

“It wasn’t?” Aiba cried. “I was so sure it was then…”

“See, I told you it wouldn’t be …” Nino said. “When could it have been?”
----

“I think it’s around that time they shot that elevator scene…” Sho said during one of their shooting breaks for VSA, when the five of them are in the greenroom. “The start of Jun-kun and Mao-chan’s relationship, I mean…. I’m pretty sure it’s around that time…”

“What makes you think so?” asked Aiba. “I think the punch scene is a safer bet, the elevator scene is somewhere in the fourth or fifth episode already…”

“Fourth…” Matsujun supplied from behind his script. He’s perfectly sure that none of the guys would be able to guess correctly and he isn’t really that interested on what their guesses would be but he found it a bit funny listening in on why they chose those scenes.

“Think about it…” said Sho. “That was a pretty long scene they shot with just the two of them… A very sweet one too… Something is bound to have happened then…”

“Small space, long scene, very close contact… That’s a pretty good bet…” Nino smiled without looking up from his DS. “Except that I think it happened a lot earlier than that…”

“Oh, really?” said Sho

“When did you think it started then?” Aiba challenged. “Want to share your thoughts?”

Nino’s smile grew wider, a bit reminiscent, as he even paused his game when he said “During the birthday party scene with that accidental kiss… Mao-chan’s real beauty floated then…”

The dreamy tone Nino had adapted, plus the dreamy look he had on, was enough for Matsujun to put down his script and scowl at his group mate. It was even enough for Ohno, who is seated next to Nino and appeared to have gone on dreaming about his past catch or his next one, to snap out of his dream and look at the gamer beside him in amusement.

Sho started clearing his throat to attract Nino’s attention while Aiba was trying hard not to laugh, especially since Matsujun had made a move to stand already.

Nino, having realized that he had dazed out for a bit, looked up and saw Matsujun standing there with quite a threatening glare.

With an innocent smile he said “What? I’m just saying…”

“So what makes you think it started there?” Aiba asked, still containing his laughter.

“That was their first kiss…” Nino shrugged. “If it was me, I’d have done something about it… Mao-chan in that dress is very angelic…”

Matsujun smirked, deciding that it was the best time to get the hell out of their greenroom before he forgets that Nino is his friend and he shouldn’t be that annoyed with him just because he has a huge crush on his girlfriend, he grabbed his script and walked to the door.

Before he left though, he said “I’m not that slow.”

A short bout of silence reigned in the room when Matsujun closed the door behind him. And then Aiba couldn’t contain his laughter anymore. He burst out laughing as he reached over to pat Nino’s shoulder and said

“I know I’m the one who’s always being called stupid and all but there’s no way would I let my friend know how much I’d love to change places with him because I like his girlfriend…”

Nino simply smirked while Ohno smiled and went back to his dream state. Sho was shaking his head though as he said,

“So it started earlier than that huh…”
-----

“I think it happened some time during the airport scene…” Ohno said out of the blue as he entered the van, their third night concert at Kokuritsu had just come to an end.

“What are you talking about?” Sho asked, entering after Nino who was following Ohno.

“The beginning of Jun-kun and Mao-chan’s relationship…”

“Oh, you have to say it outright…” Nino said. “Especially during moments like this… Or else we would think you’re talking nonsense again…”

“We’re talking about this now?” Matsujun sighed, entering the van last and closing the door.

“Of course Jun-kun…” Aiba cheered. “There’s no better time than now!”

“What airport scene?” Sho asked. “I remember two airport scenes during the first season… The one where Rui was leaving or the one where Domyouji was…”

“The last one!” said Ohno. “The one with Mao-chan chasing the plane and the sunset-kiss-thing…”

“You sound confident Riida…” Aiba smiled. “What makes you so sure?”

Ohno shrugged. “I just thought that might be it… I remember the first time I saw that scene, I almost thought that it was real… I didn’t think Jun-kun was acting there…”

“Yeah… I remember that!” Aiba exclaimed. “The one Jun-kun reenacted with Becky-chan! She wouldn’t stop talking about that scene for a week after it was aired even if everyone on set saw it too… She absolutely loved that scene…”

“Yeah… I liked that scene too…” said Sho. “It almost felt real…”

“It’s because it actually is real…” smirked Nino. “Right, Jun-kun?”

Matsujun was already actually smiling as he listened to his friends talk, but since his back was to them, they didn’t know that.

He remembers that scene all too well too, partly because they were running against time and partly because he thought it would be the last scene he’d have with her. His past experiences had taught him that even if his season would be good enough to spawn another season, chances are, he wouldn’t be there for season 2.

This was why when Director Ishii said they’re going to have the actual take, he reeled in every emotion he could muster and did the best performance he had done yet. He wanted their last shoot to be memorable.

When he still didn’t say anything, Nino continued “Besides, I thought we already established that it happened earlier during the first season… That’s the season finale… It couldn’t be right!”

“Oh yeah…” Sho exclaimed. “Jun-kun said it was earlier than the birthday party scene…”

“Waaah! I don’t know anymore!” Aiba cried after a short understanding silence amongst the four, standing up from his seat to lean over to Matsujun. “Tell us already, when did it really start?!”

Matsujun simply smiled and closed his eyes, pretending to go to sleep. He knew that even Aiba isn’t that bold to bother him once he’s sleeping. It worked perfectly too since he heard Aiba sigh as Sho ordered him back to his seat.
-----

“Oh, hello Aiba-chan!” he heard Mao say as sitting up straight as she answered the phone call. “What’s up?”

The two of them were in his apartment; having a bit of a peaceful moment as he continued reading his novel while Mao was using his lap as a pillow as she started with her sketches, when her phone rang. Matsujun groaned; he should have expected that from Aiba considering that he’s been canceling his phone calls to him since they separated early that afternoon and ignoring all the messages he kept on sending.

“Ouiji, it’s for you…” Mao said, handing him her cell phone with a curious look. “Why is he calling me instead of your number?”

“Because he’s avoiding me!” they both heard Aiba say from the other line, evidently listening very closely.

“Urusai!” Matsujun said the moment the phone was next to his ears. “Are you telling me that you called just because of that? Fine then! Let’s hear what you’ve got… No Aiba-chan, it wasn’t then… Not then either… And especially not that time… No, I’m not going to tell you when…”

He remained silent for a while as he listened to Aiba before he said “Look Aiba-chan, I am going to end this call and I am not going to expect anything from you tonight. Not a phone call, not a message, and certainly not you appearing in person. You are going to bug someone else, Sho-chan for example, or I will personally request to Shimura Ken-san that he send you to the biggest and wildest kangaroo haven there is on earth and I’m going to make sure Johnny-san agrees when they ask his approval, am I making myself clear? Good… Good evening Aiba-chan…”

The moment he pressed the end button and tossed the phone to the nearby table, Mao was already looking at him curiously.

“What was that about?” she asked.

“Aiba’s just being his normal self…” he shrugged with a small smile. “He wanted me to confirm if he finally got the right answer…”

“The right answer to what?”

Matsujun shrugged as he returned to his book. “About when our relationship started… He got curious about it some time last week and all four of them had been bugging me since then… I guess I should tell them pretty soon if I want to have some peace and quiet…”

Mao smiled mischievously as she lowered his book, making him look at her. “What exactly are you going to tell them?”

“The truth…” he said, turning to lean to her. “I’m going to tell them that we started the first time I saw you…”

“Oh really…” Mao smirked, leaning away. “I specifically remember you being a snob the first time we met…”

Matsujun smirked as he let his right hand snake to the base of Mao’s nape and allow his fingers to start playing there, making her look him in the eyes.

“I said the first time I saw you… Frankly speaking, I don’t remember that meeting at the hallway at all…” he said, as he started closing the distance between their faces. “The first time I saw you was during the cast meeting already…”

“And what makes you think our relationship started then?” Mao asked in a slightly breathy voice as her eyes trained on his lips.

Matsujun smirked. “Because I fell in love when I first saw you... You smiled because you knew…” he breathed before fully capturing her lips.
